Default H-D Auto Primary Tensioner

What is the slack in the upper chain portion supposed to be when the H-D auto tensioner is installed in the primary? And, how does the H-D tensioner only ratchet in one direction, supposedly leading to overtight chains? Thanks.

I'll answer my own question - forget this tensioner. With careful adjustment of the clutch, chain tensioner (with the manual adjuster), proper level of primary oil, and correct freeplay at the lever, I can get the shift smoothness of my bike to be very quiet and just right. An automatic tensioner is not needed, just some care.

I have installed tensioner on several die hard chain bikes. Iuse the one that utilzes a spring tension . These bikes ride quieter and have had no problems over several thousand miles. I do not use the hydraulic type due to problems.

it's a bad idea and poor advice - to run without a primary tensioner - even when your chain is adjsuted correctly....
btw - what kind of mileage do you put on your bike?
is it two-up, heavily loaded, droning on the hwy??
