Default Clunking when I let out clutch

Hi everyone,

When I shift (up or down) and let the clutch out I get a clunking sound. The dealer said it was the clutch basket and that it was normal.
If I only slightly pull in the clutch lever and shift then let out the lever it does'nt seem to do it.

This is different than the clunk when I actually shift gears.

Do any of you have this happen to your bike?

Thanks,

Rob

Get a manual if you don't already have one, and do a clutch adjustment. While you're in there, change the fluid to a good syn 10w-40 (just a suggestion). I used Amsoil and my '07 Softail likes it. I would also change the fluid in the tranny to a good syn 75w-140 which will clam down the tranny noise when you shift from clunk to click.

Thanks Cast I will give that a try. I was just concerned there was something wrong with my clutch.

Unhappy

Romac, I have the same problem as you. Dealer still doesn't know what it is but my bike hase 5000 miles on it and it just gets worse. Especially when it is hot the knock when I let the clutch out is more pronounced. They said to ease out on the clutch but really who drives like that all the time. I don't want to have to be thinking about easing out on the clutch when I'm merging into traffic on the freeway. I think there is a definite issue here. I don't know what it is but sometimes when I am at a long red light I put it in neutral then when I shift to first it doesn't go all the way in and I ease out on the clutch and I get that clank just the same sound when shifting through the gears and engaging clutch. Please post if you have gotten your problem resolved at least I would know where to start. I also have a couple of friends that have actually sheared teeth off the primary and found them when the fluid was changed.

I too found a tooth from my ring gear attached to my primary drain plug magnet. This was at 1000 miles. Had the clutch basket replaced. At 5000 I changed the fluid and found a few more small pieces attached to the magnet. I don't know if it is from the first incident or its something new. I'll change out the fluid in 2500 miles and see if anything more comes out. Thankfully, no metal on the engine drain plug.

i adjusted the clutch and the clunk went away for a little while but came back again. i only hear it when i'm just starting off and barely moving. the rest of the time the clutch and the trans work well.

Default clunking

what you might be feeling is lash in the primary drive.
My bikes do that also - check your primary chain adjustment

Aloha,
Sorry for the long post. I just joined this board and have the same problem with a loud clunk from day one. I have been to the dealer 2 times for this. He hears the clunk and says it's NOT normal but is at a loss as to where it's coming from. He took the primary completely apart removing the compensating sprocket, auto chain tensioner and clutch basket. Zip, Zero, Nada, nothing...He says he needs something obvious to tell the Moco to get warranty parts. He's hoping something breaks. He thinks it's the tranny but can't be sure. NMaybe the output shaft slapping back and forth.

I have 115o miles on the bike and it just gets louder. Not only does it clunk but my buddy commented today how loud of a clunk it makes when shifting. What makes it wired is he has loud pipes. He has worked at a couple dealerships and says it's not "Normal".

I just had the 1000 mile service and there was the normal fuzz on the engine, Tranny, and chain case magnets....??????

Here's something to try... Get the bike on a slight down-hill slope and "Feather" the clutch with your feet on the ground. Try to keep the bike in the same place when letting the clutch out. When I say "Feather" I mean let the clutch slightly engage then dis-engage at a fast rate... When I do that I get a very loud Clunk....Clunk! Here something else I have found.. My bike is an 08 FLHTCU anniversary model with anti-lock brakes. The other day I was riding in the rain and a car jumped out in front of me and I stomped on the rear brake. Normally an anti-lock brake will pulse 4-6 times in a second but I got the same loud Clunk.....Clunk (2 times in a second) for however long it was that I had my foot mashed on the brake. It sounded the same as when I feather the clutch.

I am curious to know if anyone has the same results.

Aloha Jim
