Default belt drive tension

Is there a way to get the belt tension right without the harley tool?

yes - look at your manual (you do have the manual for your bike right?) and it will outline a procedure whereby you can adjust the tension using the hash marks on your belt guard.

I understand the procedure as outlined in my factory manual but I do not own the Belt Tension Guage (#HD-35381)used to apply 10lbs of force for measuring deflection. I'm looking for advice on how to get the tension close without buying the tool,I read somewhere that it's better to have the belt a little too tight than too loose.

well up until recently i didnt have a tension gauge and did it by feel using my calibrated arm (seriously i used a veg scale at the mareket to get a feel for what 10lbs felt like)....and all was well.....but the gauge is pretty inexpensive, so maybe your better off buying it...if your not sure you can do it by feel. too tight isnt good an can lead to all sorts of distress as can too loose...so you should dial it it..

my .02$ bite the bullet an buy the tool

can you turn the belt 45 degrees without grunting?

as long as you feel a good amount you're in the ball park

I adjusted the belt for a while by "feel" and never had a problem, but I finally bought the tool (it's only about $30) and it works great.

BTW, it'll be her first build by herself, gorgeous and a pretty good wrench too...

A simple fish scale of good quality should do the job for belt tensioning. But for the money, go ahead and get the tool.
