I do appreciate Peterson's article in the April AIM. As an owner of a 2007 Ultra - I read that article with great interest. I found it very informative and confusing. In on hand he is saying that if addresses several issues that were brought about with the introduction of the six speed trans - change in the way it is manufactured. I understand all of this and have read all of this in the other forums. I changed the way I ride the bike - but at the last paragraph leads me to believe that I need to ad this piece of equipment. He mentions that it retails at the parts department for $375.00 - he didn't mention the 2 hours labor it costs to add this part.
My beef is that it is an issue - generally speaking with only the 2007's since it was added as standard equipment for the 2008. So - I am lead to believe that I need to spend - let's say $600.00 to address issues brought about the change the MOCO made.
I went to his website mentioned at the end of the article to write this directly but could find his e mail address - so I am posting this here.
I have read that folks who have added the IDS and state they ove it and they state it makes a difference but if it "fixes" the problems Peterson mentioned - then I believe that it should be a retrofit at no cost to the owners of the 2007..but at the end of the day - I know that will never happen - it is what it is.....

After reading your post I read the article. Great article too. I think you should have this device installed for free from any dealer. The whole idea of a bigger primary sprocket, taller gear ratio, 6 speed and increased stroke of the 96" motor all seem to have caused a few problems. At least there seems to be many different answers. I mean, I've read that changing the rear pulley to raise rpms a little helps too.
The install and part is not free at any dealer. They haven't recognized this as an issue but have come up with a part to addreess "concerns" of engine lugging from some of their customers. We as a group of people who love the Harley's will do what it takes to makes the bike right - with or without the MOCO - theat is just the way we are - a small group that will take this kind of stuff. At the end of the day the "fix' is $600.00 + depending on the labor rate of the dealer. so what is a person to do - I have just spent almost $900.00 install an oil cooler and oil temp gage - just to make usre I don't burn up the engine because it runs really really hot. Now I need to spend another $600.00 + just to make it ride smoother...........?????? Yikes ....

My email was mentioned in Donnys article and yes I thank him for his article, just wish it wouldve came out earlier. The MOCO is offering this kit and installs during winter specials for 07 owners. This is by dealers and from factory that denied that there was even a noise. They turned what shouldve been a recall into a money making thing. If this noise wasnt a safety item it surely was an EPA noise related one and they dodged the bullet.Heads shouldve rolled over this but are now looked as being heros since this kit is such a great seller.Im sure HD is thinking of a way to offer another enhancement-owner pays-for the scissoring crank problems that are showing up.If this the way the are going to build bikes or at least stand behind them, then this is my last new HD.
To say the least - I have been disappointed with the response from the MOCO - however, as with all new things - Chit happens - but they need to at least go back"as in customer relations move" and drop the price on the part or do a recall something that will recognize "good customer relations" OOPs - I forgot I was talking about the MOCO.

I am going to order the IDS from http://www.zanottimotor.com/ - save about $125.00 - take it to the guy that does the work(http://www.a1cycles.net/) on my bike and have him install it when I change the back tire. I guess that is the alternative to this problem

I also read the article by Petersen in the April issue. I thought the article was very informative. So much in fact I went to the dealer and had the IDS installed on my 07 FLTR. I had already changed the tranny oil to Mobil 1 Syn 85-140. After the install by the dealer which only took and hour at a total cost of $375.00 I was surprised by the difference. I had them also check the bike for a noticeable whine or whirring noise at 60 mph ~2500 rpm. After the IDS install I do not notice the noise anymore and shifting is also better. There is still the clunking noise when shifting into 1st gear but that seems to be the way they are. Other
As for heat issues mentioned by others in the forums I had the dealer install heat shields, SE Air, V&H Slash Cut slipon mufflers and the V&H fuelpak when I took the bike into the dealer after purchase to install accessories. The bike only had 100 miles and i can say that heat is not so much an issue anymore and the performance definitely improved. I would say I got at least 10 more horsepower and an increase in torque.
