Default Forward Controls for an open primary

Hey guys, I recently just bought my first Harley and have a couple questions. It has a 3 inch open primary set up and 4 inch extended forward controls. Im quite a bit shorter than the guy I purchased the bike from so is it possible to use factory length forward controls?..Also with the open primary, the kickstand had to be modified and now everytime you want to park, you have to put the kickstand in place by hand. Anyone know if they make a kickstand kit for bikes with open primaries?? Thanks

If you are going to keep running the open belt drive you need to find a better setup (sorry, not sure where is best to find them), Til then shut her down before you stick your hand down there
A guy I used to work with got kind of ticked off when he couldn't talk me into converting to open belt. Then a few month later he started yapping and told the story of how his brother got a finger torn off trying to lower the kickstand.

Hey 97 nice to have you here. I think the open primaries look cool but I for one could never feel comfortable riding with one. I'm sure some old school guys will chime in. Good luck with the bike.

Just a question...Would a center stand work better? I believe Frisco has been running open Primary's.

Frisco any thoughts?

Hey JC --- between the fuel question and this one we're becoming the Cisco and Pancho show------ I got dibs on Cisco..........

Hey 97

If the previous owner didn't modify (cut-up, destroy) the mounts to the stock forward controls, I see no reason you cannot re-mount stock style controls to those mounts..
I'm guessing your cuffs will be kinda close to the machinery though..

I realize you bought the sickle this way and don't get mad, but I think running a 3" belt primary is like driving a finish nail with a 5lbs. single-jack..
I'm not certain that they exert extra stress on the primary support bearing or tranny bearings or motor shaft bearings but I would guess so..
And,, if there is NO outer primary cover at all,, well,,, if you ever go down on that side (the left side was always the cheap side before) now look at all the possible damage that can be done..
Ok--- the Kick-stand, I'll look in my catalogs just as you can too but it just shows again how im-practical 3" open belt drives are..

If we were drinking at the bar I would say,, as In-offensively as possible,, sell it and get a 1.5" or 1.750" belt drive, a good ventilating outer cover, and ride like the devil..

John 1:14

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD.

Why not run the 3 inch belt? Softails have all kinds of parts in catalogs. Just get yourself a nice looking guard for it. Or check with whoever you bought it from and see if they still have the original set up?

Hey 97

It's prob less money to get a 1.5" or 1.75" belt drive than a new chain drive..
And waaaay easier to maintain,, I left chain drives behind over 30 years ago..
Look around to see if anyone you know might be interested in yours or maybe you can leave it at a shop on a consignment sale..
I was just giving you something to think about..

48--

You're absolutely right,, there is nothing wrong with running the 3" belt other than what I stated.. It's kind of a toss-up,, run what you got and spend no dough or run something that puts no stress on bearings, doesn't present a danger to pants cuffs, allows the use of a standard Kick-stand, and won't cost a fortune if it makes contact with the road because you can use standard inner and outer primaries with "normal" belt drives..
Again--- it was just something for 97 to ponder..
Now, a guard for that 3" unit, that might be a good idea,, find out what they cost 48 and let us know..
