Default 95 FLSTN Transmission and Primary fluid replacement

I have a 95 FLSTN I bought recently. Where do you check the transmission fluid level as well a the primary fluid level? Also what amounts of lub does each require? Are there drain plugs and if so where are they? I know to some these sound like dumbass questions, I'm new to owning a Harley and want to replace all fluids before I take it on it's first road trip.

With all due respect sir, please buy yourself a service manual. They cost about $40.00 for a Clymer and about $75.00 for a Harley one.
If you are ready to check all of your fluids then I assume you allready have the proper tools.
A service manual will be your most valueable tool as it has all the answers.
Well...... almost all of them.

Harley shop-manual,only...forget the Clymer & Haynes books...they just are'nt very reliable...might find spec.s , etc. for a "submarine" OR "whatever" mixed-up in there...no kidding !!

Any Manual is a good place to start. Save you a ton of dough in the long run.

A certified manual for your make/model is a must. Be "very" careful putting the drain plug back in the primary. You can "over" torque it very easily. found a great fix for leaky primary drain plug. Use "liquid" pipe thread. Let it dry (24) hrs. if you can. Works great!

****If anybody tries to sell you one of the "newer" drain plugs with the "O"-Ring ****Be Very Careful **** the thread pitch is not neccasarily the same **** found out the hard way

The "newer" drain plugs are exactly that: for newer bikes & the thread is nowhere near the same!

Your tranny fill should have a dipstick on it.

Your primary should be filled till it reaches just below the bottom of the derby opening. Generally 1 qrt.

I make it a point to own a manufacture service manual for every bike I own. And as you see from my sig, I don't like to take my bike to the dealer.

Further if you check the harley how to site... I put up a generic v-twin how to service your bike thread with pics. It may not all be the same but should help you along a bit.

How are you Evo? I agree. When I first got the bike I wondered if I should save a couple of bucks and just get one of the other two, cheaper manuals. But these guys convinced me to bite the bullet and get a GENUINE HD shop manual. If you search and search you can find them cheaper than what our "guest" suggested. It was money well spent. Even at full price, it is cheaper than a service charge by the dealer to do the same thing. And the manual pays for itself over and over.

Good Job Gas Man!
