I have found that many of the new 6 speed tranny's have a problem. I have a 06 Dyna Wide Glide. 8 Months and 10,000 miles after purchase, I had a whining/grinding sound in the tranny. HD shop said the primary had not been seated correctly in many of the 6 speeds. They repaired the tranny and replaced the race bearings. Two weeks ago the sound started again. I can hear it in neutral, pull the clutch in and the sound changes, then put in gear and the sound changes again. Can hear it through all gears. HD shop would not cover due to out of warranty. I wrote to HD Corp. They called me stating to take the bike in. If it was the primary again they would cover the cost. Talking to the HD shop, they confirmed there are many 6 speed tranny's coming in for primary problems. There was a recall on some early 06 tranny's but mine was not part of the recall. If this happens again, I'm selling the bike. Can't afford a $600 tranny rebuild every year.
[i bought an 06 fxdwg put a little over 10,000 miles on it before trading it in on a 08 fxdwg it now has almost 9000 miles and i knock on wood have not had any noise or problems with the trans or primary , but the engine sure seems to run awfull hot to the point that it burns the underside of my right leg and i have to cut my rides short if the temp of the day isnt less than 75 B][/B] no problems if temps are lower do any of u have any any cures for the heat ? ps the cam support no bearing issue has me concerned any known failures yet how long untill failure ? answers are appreciated MR,MF
i'm no expert, but it sounds kinda weird that you're motor is running so hot that you have to cut rides short above 75 degrees.hopefully some of these gurus will come take a look at this thread.i do know that a good idea for anybody who rides in warm temps is an oil cooler.it seems like from what i've read that jagg makes about the best ones out there.i checked out their site, you can get a good 10 row oil cooler for $200.should do a pretty good job of lowering engine temps.just google jagg oil coolers, you'll find it.
but still, from what you described it sounds like your bike is running way hotter than normal.is it stock or have you modified it?
Mr MF,
The EFI's have a tendency to run lean and hot. Have you upgraded anything? I installed stage 2 intake, Vance & Hines Big Radius exhaust and VH programable fuel chip. I noticed the engine pinging after shut down. pulled the exhaust sheilds and the pipes were blueing. Pulled the plugs and they were white. I called V&H and talked them into giving me a different code to enrich the fuel. It has cool down significantly. It still runs hotter the my girlfriends carbed HD. I will eventually put it on a dyno and get the fuel system adjusted correctly. A oil cooler can help, but don't expect a lot when you run in stop and go or slow traffic, 35-40MPH or under. First pull your plugs to see if the heat is due to too lean fuel mixture. If that's the case, get it to mechanic to enrich the mixture.
that's kinda what i was thinkin, runnin too lean.that's why i asked if the bike is stock or any mods.
i also have v&h exaust and the fuelpak and i think it's working pretty well.my bike isn't as dialed in as it could be,sure, but i don't want to subject my bike and my wallet to the thrashing they'll both receive form getting it fine tuned on a dyno.i'm not racing,so what do i care if i could get 5 more hp?it's not worth the big bucks it takes to get it dyno tuned to me.
thank you all for the good advice and the common consensus is the motor running to lean yes and yes the bike is completely stock i have a power comander that i intend to install along with a better intake as soon as i decide what to get that will leave the stock cover its an anaversary edition and i am not a fan of loud pipes so the stock exhaust will be fine with me i have put out some other posts to find out more about some problems i've had with the power comander hope that somone can fill me in on there experiences with the security system shuting down the bike when you unplug the ecm to plug in the power comander again thanks for the replies and info MR,MF.
hey, first of all,as for wanting to keep the stock air cleaner cover,Ness big sucker is what i went with on my bike,u keep the stock cover, and it's been working pretty well.second, the stick exhaust won't do i'm afraid.you need a free flowing exhaust on that bike if you plan on putting a high flow air cleaner and power commander on it.you got more coming in one end right?so there's gonna be more going out the other end as well.the stock exhaust is too restrictive, and if you leave it on while making those other mods, your bike will probably run like crap.if quiet is what you want,i'd suggest screamin eagle slip on mufflers.they're pretty quite, but they'll still give you what you need to match the other mods your making.as far as anything else quiet,i'm sorry but i ca't tell ya,that's not was i was researching when trying to decide on a new exhaust for my bike
