Default 1988 FLHTP Gear Ratio

Hi all, I just bought an 88 FLHTP and I was told that it was geared differently from civilian models. Can anyone tell me what the ratio was? Is the tranny geared differently or was it done with the primary or final drive sprockets? Is 5th still 1:1? What would I be looking at for RPM's at say 30, 60 and 80 mph?

Thanks

Hi Shov

I've looked for a late 80's FLHTP before and wasn't able to find it but a dime to a doughnut the gearing in the primary is 24 - 37 giving you a 1.541 primary drive..

All the other FLH's in my books are 32 - 70 Rear Drive = 2.1875..

That all becomes a 3.37 final drive ratio..

To find out if your sickle has a diff Final Drive Ratio count the teeth on your rear pulley.. If it is less than 70 you'll have a Higher Final Drive Ratio..
It might be 61T or 65T or 68T..

I'll give you the tools to figure it out yourself..

Count the Tranny pulley teeth,, then count the rear pulley teeth, then divide the tranny into the rear pulley---- 32/70 = 2.1875..
The Primary is 24/37 = 1.541..
Then multiply them------ 1.541 x 2.1875 = 3.37..

In 5th (1-1) with a 3.37 you'll be about 2700 RPM's at 60mph..
About 3600 at 80..

At 30 in 2nd you'll be about 3000 and in 3rd about 2200..
2200 is lugging it at almost any speed..

Have a ball..
