Default Outer Primary Cover Gasket

When re-installing the outer primary cover, should a gasket tack or sealant be used? If so, any recommendations?

The manual for my sportster says to re-install the new primary gasket and to tighten/torque to recommended values in the sequence shown in my manual. Nothing is said about a sealant being needed. Have you called a dealer and asked them??

I've pulled my primary cover off twice and, thus, replaced two gaskets. Have never used sealant, and I've never had a leak.

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD.

No sealant,in some cases (large distance between fasteners) sealant acts like a lube & slides the gasket out!

My dealership used red loc-tite when they put on my SE air cleaner, so they aren't infallible...

Hey dm

All great replies,,, permit me..

I have re-used the Outer gasket 4 times on my 127" sickle with No leaks No sealant..

Correct torque on screws and a clean surface..
I re-use gaskets often..
Just something to consider..

I have also had good success in re-using the primary gasket several times on my '94 Evo. I agree also that no 'tack' or 'sealant' be used other than the gasket.

Hi Peoples,
On the 85 Evo the outer primary is aluminum and I'm sure the inner ain't but I'll double check anyhoo, I was experiencing a bit of seep and was torqueing the fasteners a little higher each time and stripped the bottom right one by the drain plug at only 175 inch lbs. The book calls for 18 - 21 ft lbs (216 - 252") so I was well under. Also stripped one way too easy in the derby cover but being aluminum I guess that'll happen.
I'm guessing that the fix is a heli coil type dooma hickey, am I correct? If in fact it is, must the inner primary come off to do the repair? In the meantime I'll look at some coils at the store and maybe shed some light on myself.

I'm pretty sure my '94 Evo manual says 110 inch/pounds.
You should be able to do the repair in place, just be careful not to get any metal shavings inside the primary. (stuff it full of rags.)
