Hey Whopper,

Just read the thread. Just haven`t had much time. Glad it is back together.
Don`t hear much abot trans trouble with newer Sportsters.

Be glad it isn`t an 04 or newer without the trapdoor. Think about the same part costing a total teardown.

Live and learn

Who assembled that at the factory? That shift mech should not have come flying apart like that. That means [same] year sporty should fail about now.

So, don't you think it was the assembly line and H-D got off of that warranty is a few years down the road. If that is the case, then if I buy a H-D, I am going to build it from the ground up is do not trust anyone seems like not even the factory.

What is up with that? I'd at least have them send you a jacket is this is a public disgrace on the factory build.

I don't think Gold Stars were assembled that bad is compare one factory to another.

Hi Whopper
Glad to read that you got this one handled...good job.

As for your wish to know what you were doing wrong at the end there...I can only gather from your story (as I'm interpreting it) that it seems as though you loosened your clutch cable to adjust it AFTER adjusting the clutch itself. If that's the case, that's where you went astray. You should always put slack in the clutch cable first...then loosen your clutch adjuster...readjust your clutch...and then readjust the cable last. That way you know everything is loose to start with and you won't have one thing working against the other in the meantime.

Oh,well...small issue...and all's well that ends now get out there and ride it...while I hope this answers your question and puts your mind at ease.
