Default "Road Fixing" Broken Linkage

Well, somewhere between Laughlin and the Grand Canyon, (a place called Ash Fork) we pulled over for gas, and I couldnt get the bike to shift.... the shifter rod was laying off to the side. the stock "ball and socket" failed.
So, I reached down and hand shifted to get it in a lower gear and rode it the rest of the way into the gas station, a few yards away.
Went inside and asked the nice young lady if she had any zip ties so I could fix my bike. I also bought electrical tape and duct tape to complete my fix-it-kit.

here's how I got thru the rest of the trip !!!! We went to the nearest Harley dealer 45 miles away in Bellemont and got the new parts, I stepped up to stainless hiem joints with nylon in there, but I never took the time to install them.... ha ha ha ... so I rode the rest of the trip like this...

It's hard to see, but the zip ties are linked together so they can "hinge" and move with the two shifter components.

Oh yeah Unc

Do you know how many guys a simple thing like that woulda stopped..??
Good man..

I went to shift, pulled the handle and the Mouse-trap snapped open..
The old clutch rod evidently broke and escaped..
I always have things like tie-wraps and simply made a big ole loop, 2 ties thick from the Bell-crank to the clutch arm..
The local HD shop had no idea what a mouse-trap was and of course had no clutch rod for me..
Tie-wraps baby, yeah..

Common problem. I bought a Landmark shifter linkage with the Heim joints and keep it in the saddlebags of my Road King. Already have it on my Wide Glide.

The cute girl at the counter that gave me the zip ties says... here, use a pink one. So I did that for her.

zipties... carry them in every bike. Either in a tool roll on the chop or sporty. Or on the bagger in the saddlebag..

Great road side repair. engineering at its best!
