Thanks Unclepsycho and Frisco, seems like every project I get into lately throws me a curve, it's good to have people like you around. If you don't see me on here as much as usual it's because my computer is in the shop and I borrow my son's , hopefully in another week I'll be back in shape. Ride safe and God bless. Sincerely: Shovelmike.

Thanks Ken and Psycho for your concern. She is doing much better, she's on three different types of anti-seizure medication in combination morning and evening and she only has 2-3 episodes per day...with those she just stiffens and zones out for about a minute in contrast to the grand-mals she was having. She's peacefully sleeping in our spare bedroom as we speak. My son and daughter in law asked if we'd watch her while they went out of town.....an emphatic yes, she is such a joy!

The continuing saga...I got the new tranny in the frame, inner primary installed...hey making good progress now...now to put the key in the keyway so I can install the clutch hub...what in the world, the keyway is a thousandth or two too narrow. Anyone ever encounter this kind of deal? I searched at hardware and auto parts stores, took calipers along to try to find one on the thin side...if it's not one thing it's ten others.

Hi Mike

First, I just want to be sure you've got a good installation up to this point so humor me ok,, you see I don't know how faniliar you are with this kinda swap, you may be waaay familiar but I just wanna be sure..
Now that you've tightened the Inner Pri forward (motor) bolts & rear (tranny) nuts have you turned the main-shaft By Hand AND reached under/behind to turn the Tranny sprocket with your fingers.?
They must Both turn freely with NO tight spots respectinely OR to each other..
If they do then you're sittin in tall grass and move on,,, if not you must loosen all 4 Pri to motor bolts and all 4 Pri to tranny nuts and start the tightening process over again..

If you need to start the process over again-- tighten the 4 Pri to tranny nuts first with the Pri to motor bolts barely finger tight..
As you tighten the nuts keep checking the mainshaft free-turn as well as the sprocket..
If you simply cannot get the shaft and sprock to turn free with NO tight spot it well could be the tranny needs to be shimmed at one or more corners..
One way to check that is to loosen the 4 Tranny mount nuts & 1 tranny support bolt (under the kicker) and let the unit float.. If the shaft and sprock then turn freely with NO tight spots, then for sure you'll have to shim the unit to Precisely fit the Motor to Pri to Tranny combo, because from the Main-shaft support bearing back it's getting tweaked..
You know how to contact me..

OK, on to the key---------
Mike, I really wouldn't fret too much about it---- I would simply grasp it tightly by fingers and Squarely file that 1 or 2 thou off one side..

OR---- lay a 200 to 400 grit on a very flat surface like a glass tile or something like it you prob have around and, "precisely" as you can, wear down one side with even pressure till you take off that wee bit.. A hard press fit is Heaven..
Be very close to the sickle so you can quick & easy check it to the keyway every few seconds------ you do not want to take off toooo much..
If you do though, I have a very good fix for that..

Thanks Frisco, I was hoping you'd jump in here. I appreciate the info on checking for free rotation, I'm definitely not offended. I'm not familiar with swaps like this..same old tranny out and back twice but not dealing with production variations that could cause grief. The shafts appeared to be fine but I will double check for sure, I leave the five mounting points on the bottom of the case somewhat loose so it can float and save them to tighten last...would want to assure good rotation at that point.
Thanks for the reassurance with respect to the key. I filed it a little, just didn't know how problematic it will be to have it then be a little looser than desired in the hub (I know it is a tight fit on the taper of the shaft but can't take any chances).
I'll let you know how it goes. I hope to be back on the road soon. I'll get this key thing solved, then need to deal with the right side..the kicker cover on the old one was secured by nuts on studs which doubled to support the battery and brake pedal/footpeg....on the new one they used recessed allen bolts, very nice looking but it means I will have to use spacers of same OD as the heads of the allens and possibly slightly longer bolts...local hardware/farm supply has a good selection, been scoping them out..wheels turning in my head.
Thanks again. Ride safe and God bless. Sincerely: Shovelmike.

Uh Oh

If you get good rotation with the 5 bottom points loose it could Very well change as you tighten the tranny down causing a tweaking of the Main-shaft and tight spots galore.. Early bearing destruction..

Soooo----
While it's floating use feeler guages to determine if there's space between the trans. bottom and the plate,,, and fill them with brass shim stock under the mount studs..

Check that rotation AS you tighten down the first 4.. Do the "fifth" Last with concentration on shimming it Perfectly..

This makes the diff between years and decades..
