oops!
I haven't tried the washer,(yet), guess I got too many ideas floating in my head. I gotta rummage thru my stuff and find one.....after I re-do the measurements.
My paper with all the measurements on it shows .900 between the comp/sprok and engine, with the crank nut finger tight. and then.880 with the crank nut tight. that's only .020 compression on the comp spring!!! I gotta re-measure. After some more coffee this morning, I'll go re-measure.

Ok
Now I re-measured the comp/sprok again, (twice). It only has .020 travel from finger tight to torqued to crank.
the CS has approx .175 travel in the springs.

Hmmmmm

That means .175 - .020 = .155 travel to play with! My qusetion is how much of that do I want to use and how much should be left for the CS to do it's job.

I have no washers/shims that size, so I am off to the store to find one oe two.

Oh, waitaminit! I got that new fandangled CS laying on the bench holding a book open, I can use the washer from there!!!!, but it is .125 thick.

Maybe I need to cut that long crank nut off a little to allow it to go farther???

I will go measure the crank nut now.

Well, I think we are onto something.... and I believe it was suggested way back a few days ago, and I missed it.

The gap from washer to CS is .839 and then I measures the thread travel with the CS off the nut and got approx .839 +-for the nut to bottom out!

Frisco asked me that as one of the first things to look for!

So, the washer should be the answer.

I will go for half the spring travel, so I am going to try a .090 shim first, if I can find one. maybe I'll make one.
(I made my own shims for my Diff on my 4x4 when I set the backlash on the ring and pinion. I cut shims from a piece of water pipe, then hit them on a belt sander to bring them into spec all the way around. that took a long time, but I had no money to buy the $45 shim pac from the dealer.

Anyway, here's how I measured the crank nut... with one thread 1/4 turn hanging on each measurement.

The washer that came with the 'new' CS was .115 thick. I installed that one and will go for a test ride!

Here's hoping this is the 'fix'!!!!

27 minutes between posts... so 20 minutes and back on road, was a very good guess there Frisco

Well, Phooey! I knew it couldn't be that easy.
(Ratchet sound is still there)

On the 15-20 mile ride, I noticed a little backfire in the exhaust on decel. the closer I got home, within the last mile, the worse it ran. about 15 feet from the carport with the lift, it sputtered and died, and wont start...so I now get to figger that out too! probly the ignition module come loose or something.

But that aint the best part, in my rush to go for a ride, I failed to see the lawn tractor and trailer parked behind the bike. ( I approach the bike from the front/side, so I get on the bike, unhook the tiedowns from the lift, and shove off with everything I got and WHAM! I plow into the trailer. I knocked the trailer clean over! and wiped out what used to be a fairly good, almost show paintjob on the rear fender.
So I get off the bike, call it all kinds of bad words... grab the traler and proceed to 'throw' it out of the way. well as that happens, the tounge swings around and catches me at the knee... but I dont go down (almost)... just more cussin'. So I get on the bike and go for the ride and after a mile.... my knee still hurts, but all is good, cuz I am on 2-wheels with my face in the breeze........

I got another same style CS ordered, just to see if the one I got is defective for some reason I cant see. I didnt get the spring pack, just the cam/gear part. it's only money.

my knee hurts

I'm gonna park the bike and go out to the family ranch and do somethig constructive.

Well, the bike sat fer a while, I went on a long ride on the Ultra, replaced the head gasket on my in-laws truck, and even fixed the wife's Jeep a/c, but I didnt forget my mission here.

the reason the motor popped and back fired and died... Uh, I, uh, it ran outta gas....yup... I just plain forgot to check the obvious.....

So now I am gonna go put the new comp sprocket on there and see if it still does that noise.

All BAck together.... went for a test ride... being friday evening... a few cops out... bike is real LOUD at full throttle, so I go find the road that the cops dont visit.... and givce the bike a good full throttle launches.... I can here the comp-sprok engage, then smooth all the way thru the rpm range...grab 2nd gear...smooth all the way thru to 3rd. by then I am close to 100 so I back off....

THE SOUND IS GONE

I compared the two comp sprokets before I installed the new one. and there seems to be no real difference, except for the old one had shiney tips and valleys on the cams. The measured the same etc... I dont get it, but it worked, so I am happy.

The motor does pop thru the exhaust on decel, sop maybe I ill pull the carb off again and put the needle back where it was, and adjust the timing a degree or two.

I want to thank everyone that helped out here, we covered a lot of ground and I now know that bike better than if I had built it myself!
The best part is now when I do want to grab a handfull of throttle It dont sound like the transmission is getting hammered to death.

Now I can focus on that Shovel again.

The top set is the old one
