I would have to say from memory of last night that when in 1st gear it is centered. When upshifted it goes to neutral and now the most forward (towards the front tire) hook is centered between two pins on the shifter drum. At this point, I can move the shifter up and the hooks do not engage any pins on the shifter drum. If I move the shifter down, the most rearward hook engages the most rearward pin and it goes into first gear.
Is that clear as mud?

I'm at work and wish I could go out and look at the shifter ratchet arm and it's orientation on the shifter drum but I can't.
I'm wondering if something is preventing the shifter drum from centering with the detent arm and it is stuck between the position where the shifter can actuate the drum to go to the next gear.
This might be the detent arm/spring itself or a shifter fork not allowing the drum to rotate around to the proper position.
When it hits neutral from 1st the shifter ratchet arm pivot point bounces in the depression on the end of the shifter drum and the teeth catch onto nothing to move the drum further to 2nd gear and up.
Can I pull the clutch release cover and then the bearing housing assembly along with the gear assembly without removing the clutch pack and drive gear in the primary housing?

Just a quick thought, there's nothing hitting any of the shift levers that is preventing full movement is there? You have to pull the inner primary to remove the gear set.

No. I checked that. There is full clearance. The shifter drum is not fully rotating to where the shifter ratchet can catch the next drum pin.
This evening I will try to rotate the drum with a screwdriver. Gently of course. If this works between each gear then I suspect that the detent arm spring may have failed or something similar to this.
I will be starting to look into the tools necessary to remove and replace the inner primary unless you come up with another way to look at the other end of the shifter drum.
I do plan to peer into the inspection plate one more time before embarking more deeply into this project. I need to know this anyway, right.

If you pull the gearset you're going to need a puller/installer to deal with the inner primary bearing race, plus a socket to remove the pulley nut.You might want to run your VIN through H-D & see if the recall was ever done (if you don't already know) this might end up being a freebie!

I don't know if they replaced the IPB when they pulled the bike apart to replace the frame after the wreck at 16,000 miles. I had the grenaded stator replaced under warranty at about 22,000 miles. I now have 29,200 miles.
I wasn't aware that there was a recall plus I have done all service since 1,000 miles.

There is a shift drum & detent arm recall on 06 Dyna models,if you PM me your VIN I can get the info for you.
The recall # is 0124,it covers bikes built between 6/9/05 & 10/19/05 (on your neck tag) although the dates are historically not 100% accurate.

Does anyone have a link to the most inexpensive inner bearing race puller online? I have found one for $183 + shipping.

Does anyone close to New Iberia, La. have the inner bearing race puller? I would drive to borrow and return.

I'm getting in over my head here. Because I'm not familiar with the bearing race you need to remove,it's size or how it's situated in it's seat. But for what it's worth Harbor Freight has an inner bearing race removing tool for about $13** you might want to check out...with 3 clawed arms that adjust out from 3/4" to over 2" inside diam. And it's frame width is even more adjustable.

It would'nt work on my steering neck bearing races. Because they just set too flush in their seats for the H.F. tool's claws to catch on the edge of them. But if there's enough "lip" exposed on your race to catch on, I'd expect it to work pretty well.

No guarantee just tossing an inexpensive idea at you.
