Default Loose Shift Lever

Who is the over educated design "engineer" that developed the placement of the shift lever on the transmission of my 03 Ultra Classic?

I'd like to meet this *@!$ing @$$hole, give him a modest tool box, and tell him he has to remove the lever without a) removing the transmission, or b) removing the clutch/primary case!

For some reason, mine became loose. It wobbles side to side, back and forth quite a bit. The allen is cinched down, but the split collar won't tighten the lever securely to the tranny shaft.

I don't need to worry about it coming off, because there ISN'T ENOUGH CLEARANCE to come off. You see, you it slides off the shaft about 1/4 inch, then it hits the primary case, and won't go any further.

The problem is sloppy shifter linkage, and down the road, probably stripped splines in the tranny shaft.

My son's VRod is great. I can remove the shift lever so easly, it's sickening.

Feel free to join in on my complaining, or, better yet come up with a way to remove this lever and replace it.

I had the same problem with my 03 FLHT. I tried like hell to tighten the linkage behind the primary but no weno. Took it to a shop to have some other work done and while I was there, he took a big ratchet wrench with an offset allen attachment and cranked down on that bitch and it hasn't loosened up since. The right tools do make a difference.....or I'm just a weak pussy........naw, it was the tools.

I saw this same thing happen on 2 other dressers. the next time you have the inner primary off the bike, grind a bit of the webing away from the back to clearance it. Don't take off more than you need to. You may need to test fit a couple of times. Next time it happens ( and it will) you can wrench it off and slip a new one on, No problem.
