No 4th gear

New guy here. Joined up 'cause a friend of mine has an interesting problem.

He's riding an '05 Deluxe (FLSTN). He did a hole shot a while back and now he's got no 4th gear at all. I work on Honda's and really have no idea how a
1st gear holeshot can eliminate 4th gear.

You can shift into the 4th gear position, seems to lock in as well as all the other gears, but nuthin happens when you get there. There's no pull, no grind, no clankin', nuthin. Just like being in neutral.

All other gears lock in solid and smooth.

Anyone familiar with this situation?

Any ideas? Yeah,something broke & the tranny needs to come apart to determine the extent of the damage,simple as that!
