Looking for more...
Hello, I have a 2004 Heritage Softail with the TC88 Engine. I bought the bike new, and shortly after purchase, I had a set of Vance and Hines Longshots installed and the carb jetted by a local performance shop. The performance was not bad but the gas milage left a lot to be desired. At some point in time, I also installed a Kuryakyn Hypercharger. This gave it a bit more zip but not a lot. At the Myrtle Beach Rally last year, I had a Mikuni 42MM Carb installed. The carb was the best thing to ever happen to my bike as it made it a lot quicker and really upped my milage. What I am wondering now is if I should change out the Hypercharger for something that may let more air into the carb and consequently bump the performance a little more. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks,
Your Hypercharger is for sure a lot better than the stocker but with the mods you've done so far I doubt it's limiting your performance at all. With the stock displacement and heads, cam, etc you don't need any kind of ultimate air cleaner (if there is such a thing). If your air filter will already flow more than your engine needs, and I bet this is your case, it won't up your performance at all. As for where the Hypercharger stands in the "flow wars" among the aftermarket makers I really can't say. I've never used one. You read a lot of hype and from time to time you'll see flow numbers like Donny Peterson published in AIM a few months back but you have to read between the lines to get anything like the whole truth. I think your Hypercharger is probably a pretty good air filter and well up to the job you're asking it to do. Now keep going with the mods and build a 120hp fire breathing engine and you might want to go looking for that Ultimate Air Cleaner. My two cents worth.

I run a Mikuni on my Evo, and Yes I have a lot of other performance mods, but I can't agree that the HyperCharger is all it's jacked up to be. I have heard of instances when the vacuum line becomes cracked or kinked preventing that cool-looking butterfly from opening fully or effectively. That would be a major hindrance.
I happen to be pretty satisfied with the Doherty PowerPakk, but if I had it to over again, I'd put a Ness Big Sucker on it.
Before throw any more money at air filters and/or carbs etc...I suggest you lose the "long-shots" (really just straight pipes that're too long etc) and look into a real performance exh. system. Seriously...although I'm sure V&H did the best they could with the "long-shots" there's only so much that can be done with those kind of pipes...and (uhh, well)they just plain SUCK overall as far as performance goes
Sorry,buddy...don't hate/shoot me I'm just the messenger

Hey Bigincher, Thanks for your reply. I wondered about the butterflys, and the Mikuni sales guy was concerned about them "confusing the carb". I have seen some of the adds for the big sucker which was really what got me thinking "more air" to start with. I am headed to a rally the end of this month and think i'll stop by and visit with the folks at Zippers Performance and see what input they have to offer. Thanks for the advice.
I tried hard not to Poo-Poo the HyperChunker, because a lot of people have them and seem to like them, and that's fine-- they have a right to their choice. Fact is, they are little more than eye-candy. Serious performance-minded riders won't give them a second glance.
I have the Mikuni air filter that's made for the Mikuni 42 I have on my pumped 80" Evo. Basically it's a K&N filter element inside a stock HD cover with a molded back plate. Simple and easy to maintain. I always thought the Kuryakin looked gimicky and I do think it is that. Still, from what I've read and heard they perform fairly well. Not the best but way better than the stock setup. If I was in the market for a new unit I'd lean toward the Doherty. Dunno about the Ness Big Sucker. Maybe if I had a big inch engine. I like smaller filters for right leg clearance.
