Default What's this about shutting off the rear cylinder?

Is THAT why my 08 feels like a it's running on one cylinder at low throttle settings?

The rear cylinder should not be shutting down at any RPM above idle. I have an '06 with EFI, and I encountered the shutdown for the first time at a traffic light while visiting in Fredericksburg, Va this summer. The temp on the bank sign was 107, and I had the lowers on the bike, although the vents were opened. The sensation of the shutdown was more akin to being on my 87 Heritage; lots of engine vibration, and more lope to the idle. As soon as I cracked the throttle, just before leaving the light, the motor returned to normal operation. The idle "circut" goes into shutdown mode in a high heat situation when idling the motor. The intent of the shutdown is to cool the motor by running only one cylinder (less heat than 2 running).

I believe mine must be shutting off all the time at idle and at low throttle settings. I'll run a compression check in the morning though. It has an even thumping idle and low speed exhaust note instead of the ka-chunk ka-chunk idle and low speed exhaust note I'm used to with Harleys. Sounds like a Honda! And it shakes worse than a solid mount Evo at idle.

Potato - potato - potato is good. Ka-chunk ka-chunk ka-chunk seems like you have some very up-set internals in your engine!

I took it by another dealer and had the service manager ride it. He said it was functioning perfectly normally, and that potato potato is a thing of the past now the we have EFI. I'll sure miss it! It was one of the most endearing aspects of the Harley personality!

My '06 FLHTI idles nothing at all like my '87 FLST. I agree, the cadence of the Big Twin is changed with the Twin Cam. Its way too sanitary for my taste, but I sure love the EFI! I do not think it sounds like a Honda, though.

On the 2007/08 there is a program the dealer can download that will shut off the rear jug - it is optional and can be turned on and off one time - under warranty. if you don't like - tkae it by and have them turn it off.

Default doesnt that seem a little nutty

shutting off the rear cylinder? I wonder if it puts undue stress
on the engine,

even though the twin cam is extra stout, slightly compromised with ball bearing (not tapered) lower end parts
and now this, i cant help but think that they are pushing it a bit, seeing how the engines recipriocating weight is high and the engine is torquey, even at idle

wanker - who might not be the sharpest blade in the box...but has a point, no?
