Talking Sleepster

Several ways you can go about this. You can use dished pistons (Wiseco) & you don't have to do anything else (Not very rewarding)Flat top pistons require mods to the combustion chamber to keep the compression at a level compatible with pump gas. While modifying the combustion chamber you should replace the 883 valves with 1200 valves (or larger, depending on level of performance desired) this is also a good time for some port work(make sure you match up your intake manifold at the same time) Or you can buy heads already treated to the port & big valve setup, the options are almost limitless. You might want to look into a kit offered by one of the reputable aftermarket shops.Zippers has always been able to wring lots of hp out of Sportsters, give them a call.

Mitch,

All depends on the amount of money you wanna spend. How radical do you want it? Are you going to do it yourself? A number of variations and or Aftermarket parts.

What I did was:

Put in High flow Air Cleaner and Pipes.

New 1200 jugs. I did new because they are not that expensive. If you can get them bored out yourself or done cheap and good go for it.

Screamin Eagle 10:1 pistons that work well with the 883 heads. I have the original 883 Heads and Valves.

Screamin Eagle mild cams.

Screaming Eagle ignition Module. I can get part numbers if needed.

Rejet on the stock CV carb.

This is what I know. Off the line I have no problem beating the Stock 883 or 1200. Still using the 883 gears which have a few less teeth. Fast off the line but I will rev a little higher at Highway speeds then the stock 1200.

At 70 MPH I pull away from both the stock 883 and stock 1200.

I thought about getting the heads ported and polished with a valve job. Thats a little spendy and I might get a bit more top end. Is it worth it ??? Harley will try and have you go up to the next size carb and intake manifold. I believe it is 44 mm. With stock 883 heads it would not be worth it.

I did this at about 5,000 miles. I have 22,500 with no problems. She runs hard and good.

Now what I want to do and you may also ponder is.

Go up to a 1250 cc.

NHSperformance.com has kits available in a number of price ranges. You can send in your old jugs and heads for re-work or get all new. I am tempted. But I think I will wait for my current motor to get tired. Call them. I did. They seem knowledgable and have a number of options. Boy now you got me thinking agaiiin.......Geez Their kit prices are resonable

A little off track here... but Axtel has 88" kits if you want to use 1200 heads and fly cut your cases to accept the larger diameter cylinders. Yeah I know, it's alot more work that a 1200 conversion, but just think, an 88" sportster! and they will last, not wear out quickly, if you respect the throttle.
Just food for thought...
