Default Gear Drive Install

starting teardown, I pushed the rear brake
pedal down and wrapped 3 heavy wire ties end to end over the pedal rubber and around
the crash bar. Gave enough room to pull the front pipe after I backed off the nut on the
bolt that passes through the front motor mount and raised the motor with a bottle jack
(rag to protect paint)

pushrods cut out
continuing I modified an allen wrench to
eliminate interference when loosening/tightening lifter cover bolts.
marinating lifters. Mark the bags as to
where they came from (front exhaust etc.) all oil holes faced out.

Default A few pictures

A took a few pictures of the gear drive conversion project. I had to get tech assistance from my son to post them. I still couldn't put the text in as I hoped. I got busy and didn't get pics throughout the project. The primary tensioner was pristine, the secondary was 50% worn out. I'm pleased to be rid of them.
Test rode it last evening. The TW21 cams add a little extra torque, unfortunately the 2 in. Rush mufflers add a lot of noise. (I know, if it's too loud you're too old lol.) I am happy to report that the gears are as quiet as the chains were.
Power Commander map- SE a/c, Wild Pigs, stock ECM. Used the buttons to add 5% fuel in low RPM and 10% in mid RPM and it seems fine.

A little over 28k on the tensioners, Wrightturn. I've seen that you have done a number of them. The workmanship on these gearsets appears to be top notch, I was impressed.

Did my gear drive (TW-26G) like 6,000 milles ago. Can't hear them at all. In fact, a bit concerned - was thinking of opening up to see how everything looks - make sure none of the bolts loosened up.

I wouldn't worry any about it. As long as you used loctite where specified and torqued the bolts to specs nothing is going to come loose. Quiet is good...believe me if any bolts came loose it would be anything but quiet.
Ride safe and God Bless. Sincerely: Shovelmike.

Default Tools, Glorious tools!

Here is the 12 ton hydraulic press I bought from Summit Racing, $130. Chinese made (ugh) but it is well made. I did a lot of research. The 12 ton units that I found claiming to be American made looked fairly poorly made, the bottle jack mounted up top and looked much less substantial than this one. Had to go to 20 ton to get a similar design ($500). I had to compromise a little. For what little I use it, it will do the job quite well. The only issue in the long run could be the hydraulics but it is simply a bottle jack, readily available and fairly cheap.
On the subject of other tools, I highly recommend Jim's cam install tools, inner cam bearing remover, and inner cam bearing installer. There is real pleasure in well made tools. The best price I found was Jireh. They are located in Missouri thus I had to pay sales tax but they still beat everyone else.
