Default 03 TC upgrade to late Hyd.Cam tensioner

I'd like to hear opinions on whether an upgrade to the late model, after 06, Hydralic cam chain tensioner and roller chain, along with the new oil pump is a good alternative to going to gear drive. I have an 03 Dyna with 14000, running Amsoil and no problems and no wierd noises but I am very aware of all the talk about Cam tensioners.

You would be out about the same $$ to convert to the new tensioners because you would have to buy new cams and bearings any way. For my money I would get rid of the tensioners all together. Even with the hydraulic tensioner the shoes are going to ware.

Agree. Get rid of the tensioners. If you want the new oil pump you can go with the SE bearing plate (billet) which comes with the new and improved oil pump.

Ok, but if I was to find out that my pinion shaft runnout was more than .003,running gear drive wouldn't be a good idea.

You are correct. You would be wise to tear it down and check runout. If under.003 go with gears, if not go with the new hydraulic tensioner setup, but know that you need to monitor wear on the tensioner shoes.

I doubt your run out is more then .003 it is more the exception then the rule besides you can get a different gear to compensate if it is. The gear drive is noisier.

It is rare to find more than .003. It does happen. My Dyna is under .001 my FLHP is just over .004. The Dyna got gears and the RK still has chains.

Oversize gears will help with backlash problems but not with runout.
I am not going to fix the RK but will ride it till it breaks and see just what you can blame on runout.
