Default 2008 Twin Cam 96 ecm Upgrade Question ??

Hello AI Forum,
My wifes new Street Glide was really cooking in last weeks 97 degree heat. The Bike was choking with two up riding and would not make any power. Forget using 6th gear at any speed!

I spoke to my dealer about the engine heat and loss of power when they performed the first service last Friday. They did not offer any solutions at first, but when they were finished , I was told that Harley had two ecm upgrades since the bike was built in 07. They told me that it came with a c map and they upgraded it to an e map. They could not tell me what the difference was between these 3 map downloads??

The bike does seem to do better than before, but is still not as snappy as my old twin cam 88. The upgrade also disabled the cruise control requiring a return trip to the dealer.

Anyone know anything about these ecm upgrades for twin cam 96 engines????? What are they changing, fuel ratio, timing or what???

Gary in PA.

80 Spokes:

I run a carb on my bike but have uploaded and Diagnosed my Cages Computer. I do know a little about ECM the Downloads for the Harleys.

Usally most folks get the download if they Upgrade Air Intake and Exhaust.

Or

Need to download the program that shuts off back cylinder while idiling if it gets too hot.

The downloads will change Fuel, Timming and Rev limitations.

We have those on the sight that can be more helpful. Anyone else?

It is widely known that the new harleys are set up to run lean so they can pass emissions. A byproduct of that is a lot of heat and poor running when hot especialy under load. They are probably adding a little more fuel to the mix with the new program.

Hopefully the dealer did the down load under warrenty since they can cost around $150.

I'm not exactly sure what the differences in the maps are but the moco makes the bikes run lean to pass EPA/CARB certification. My guess is that the map may have added a little fuel in the mid range and upper end and adjusted timing some. I test rode an 08 96 inch Road Glide there was plenty of snap in the low end. A couple of times as I was letting the clutch out the handle slipped out of my hand and even though the bike was already moving it jumped forward a little. The big change between the 07s and 08s is that the 08s have closed loop fuel injection whereas the 07s don't.
