Default Primary Leak

O.K. where to start, I've got a 2002 FLHRI, 12,000 miles on it. At about the 6,000 mile mark, I started leaking oil. The first leak was the Transmission/Engine Oil Pan (Allen Heads were loose and when I layed it over on its stand it leaked out. The second time was the Primary, after about 2,000 miles it starts dripping and gets worse. After I've replaced the Primary inner/outer gasket it stops for awhile, I've gone from not using any sealant to using sealant, from silicone or other sealant on the bolt threads to none with no luck. I also see oil sweating out of the altenator wire harness plug as well, almost like theres a pressure build up in the primary, (is there a vent?). So, I'm lookin for advice, or has anyone else had a problem? Oil levels are correct when replaced, everything else is good. Now, I've got an S&S gear drive mounted on a Delkron cam plate along with the S&S reed valve. Could exess pressure be moving to the other side into the primary and building up? Especially if the oil pump isn't scavenging like it should? I've had the bike since new.

You should have a vent. You see an open hose hanging off or comming out of it? On my sporty it is on the top of the primary. Did you see if the cover was warped? Leaking in the same spot? Okay you guys that tool around on the twinkies! This skirster guy is not as familiar with them......

You have vents that are conected to the air filtering system look to see if they are functioning right then put an oil presser gage on it and see if is a pressure problem. (Phantom fixer)

Thumbs up Primary Leak

Thanks for the replies, I've got a B.C. Gerolemy fuel injection twin runner intake tied to the vents, I'll check to see if its plugged, I was thinking like the tranny, that the primary would have its own vent? I'll also check the oil pressure, thanks.

Default Leak

Good evening,

What bypass spring are you using in the cam bearing plate ? Too strong with the S&S reed valve ?
Have the breathers in the rocker boxes been serviced ?

I have the Delkron plate with Andrews 26G cams, stock bypass spring and the original oil pump. No leaks yet with 37k miles . How long after you went with gear drive did the leak start ? What was the runout ?

All the work was done at the same time, big bore kit, SE heads stage II, Dual Plane intake, Delkron Plate and gear drive with S&S 510 cams (want to put 570's in), S&S reed valve, Jims semi-hydrolic lifters and S&S pushrods. I kind of wanted the valve train bullet proof, since the timing chain was an issue, all work done was in 2005 at a local shop. So with regards to the bypass spring, run out and the breathers, I'm not sure. Something I'll have to look into, the leak started about 1,000 miles after all the work, at the time I thought it was just the primary gasket, it was a metal one with an orange silicone gasket on it. So I replaced it and after about 2,000 miles it started again. Like the gaskets are giving way from pressure? So, I'll tear it down and start inspecting, thought I'd swap the cam out at the same time, I'll check the run out, look into the spring, pop the covers and service the breathers, swap out the primary gasket, check oil pressure and how much oil is left in the timing cover after shut off, and see what happens. I appreciate all the feed back, I'll just have to logicaly get into it and have a look, thanks.

are you sure the leak is coming from the primary gasket..? you can put a uv additive ,just a few drops...in your primary, take it for a good spin, better to wait till its almost dark out,put a black lite under there and you will see exactly where your leak is coming from....most of your primary leaks come from the jackshaft or the mainshaft seal....some come from the primary, inner, bolts........hope this helped...the primary doesnt have a vent.....

Haven't had time to do anything yet, will start sunday, you know, your right, even though I see it all around the bottom of the primary, I'll get some UV and double check before I move on. Thanks for the wake up call, I'll keep you posted.
