Default Help! Need Advice

My bike has been down for 2 months..01 Ultra Classic with Stage one and screaming eagle slip ons: brought to TSI Columbia HD in CT, 6-3-08 Under xtd wrrnty with noise from timing chain guides/shoes, they checked for eng light code.. cam sensor.. was told not to drive bike too far.got appt 2 weeks later, brought to shop, they waited another week to look at it, then had to order parts, shipped from harley on the 24th, installed new cams, gears, t-chain, adjusters.. finally got bike back on July 3rd..(warranty was up on the 28th) .rode three times about 50 miles each time... hard starting, fouled out plugs with large deposits of black powdery carbon, and engine temp seems higher than normal, brought back to shop within a week, first they adjuisted idle and said it was ok..I said that would not cure the problem & left bike.. then they said it was my DFO... then they said it was my fuel injectors... the extended warranty is now up on the bike and "Bob" wants me to pay for diagnostic time, replacing fuel injectors to fix problem... everyone I have talked to says the timing gear is probably off by a tooth... any ideas... thanks.... Really Pissed off in CT

First question, is it carbed or EFI? rejetted or remapped?

It is an EFI, but I did not ever have it re-mapped unless it was done when the DFO (fuel optimizer) was installed. Looking at the records I have for the bike ( I bought it 6-22-04) had 24K miles on it, the dealer listed a screaming eagle hi flow air cleaner, ( stage one kit) S/E turn down mufflers and a fuel injection calibration kit from Harley that were already installed on the bike. It may have been re-mapped at that time. Bike now has 60K miles on it. Bike was running and starting OK before present work was done.. it was taken to the dealer because the check engine light came on and it was noisy in the chain area. When checked with a computer the "engine light code" was for the cam sensor only. thanks, Preston

Hey 01
Did they fix the Cam Sensor prob.?
If I understand you right-- they did indeed replace the injectors --yes, no.?
If yes- did the hard starts, fouled plugs and heat prob etc. cease.?

If those probs still exist but it was ran fine before they installed cams, gears etc. it prob was Not injectors/DFO etc.. I'll bet your buds are correct-- timing..

If it is the timing gear,, since you did not mention pinging and bucking, my guess would be retarded a tooth.. Thus- hard starts, in-complete burning, over-heating etc..

Overheating can also be from waaay over rich A/F causing the motor to Over work.. Soo, if it's retarded both conditions are now at play..

Keep us posted..

You go in for a tooth ache, they fix that tooth but break your arm while doing so and wanna charge to fix your arm, typical..

They did install a cam sensor, it was destroyed when the guides wore through it, actually two cam sensors... they were testing the bike after installing the two cams, gears, t-chain, adjusters etc., (also installed an oil pump- and after I looked at the work order..they charged me for an oil service-about $85.00) and he could not get it running... they said they had a "bad" cam sensor and installed another one..... it was July 3rd at 7:00 at night when I was finally able to get the bike... and when I went to start it up it backfired and puked... on the third start, Bill the store manager happened to be there to start it... I really wanted the bike for the holiday weekend , but I should have just left it there...I only rode it three times( it rained a lot the following week) and it fouled out three different sets of plugs, each within about 50 miles.....brought it back on the following Monday...they let it sit for a week before they looked at it. First adjusted the idle... wanted me to pick it up... but I told him that was not going to fix the problem... Bob said it was the DFO causing the problem, and I would have to pay diagnostic time.. and within three minutes changed his mind and said it was the fuel injectors and they would cost $330 because the bike was out of warranty...I did not let them put the injectors in, I talked to the service manager of the sister store and he felt the timing gear was off a tooth... evidently there is no service manger at the Columbia store... so the Ellington Store manager is going to talk to the owner Moday and see what can be done... the Ellington Store manager felt the timing gear was probably off a tooth also..( Bob from Columbia is going to find another problem ...injectors on the end of my foot in his ass!!!! )

I think you may have someting with the the cams being a tooth off. I think after this experience I would find a new dealer. It would not take very much for them to open the cam case and double check their work before they try to gouge you for more $$$.

01, from one Ct Yankee to another if the work done prior to your warranty running out didn't correct the problems you've been having they still have to honor the warranty even though the ending date has come and gone. Hope you have paper for the the warranty work that was done! If push comes to shove contact WFSB or the HARTFORD COURANT they have consumer advocates that'll help you out. Bad publicity works almost every time. If you can take your warranty work elsewhere or if you have to dig deep into your own pockets I recommend taking your ride to Brothers HD in North Branford. When I have a problem that I can't solve which isn't that often that is the dealer I head for. I have three dealers that are closer than they are 10 min, 20,min and 40,min away but I wouldn't let them touch my bikes. Brothers is an hr away but it's worth the ride.
