Exclamation Oil viscosity

Got a question for the most knowledgeable board. I was just curious if changing to AMSOIL 10-40 synthetic for my 2007 Electra Glide Classic with the 96 in engine would be OK. I've been a wrench on cars and trucks for 40 years and don't see a problems on these engines but, never much experience on scooters; just minor service. I have always been fortunate and had quality rides. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Rocky
No to 10w40...yes to 20w50
Mobil-1's 15w50 has been best rated by AIM for HD use and you can get it at most any auto supply for a few bucks less per qt. than most synthetics...virtually no difference between car & cycle oils,'cept for the labels.

I would run a 20W-50 or 15W-50. I use Mobile 1 V-Twin synthetic 15W-50.
Even in the winter, just let it have a good warm up before reving it up.

I think you should use the 20W50 synthetic. The brand is not as important, since they are all good. I prefer the full synthetics, because they will take a much higher temp. before they break down compared to regular oil. The 07 and up 96 engines run very hot, especially in the summer. One engine builder told me to run 20W60 Redline in the summer in Florida. I don't, but it might not be a bad idea.

Default Oil Type

Not an expert here by any means. I recently switched to Amsoil 20W-50 for my bike, primarily because from what I read it got better reviews than HD Syn3 and it can be used just like Syn3. For me it is easier to use one product instead of purchasing and storing 3.

You cannot get the required 5 micron filter from Wal Mart, so nix on that idea.

Do Not run a 10W anything.

And evoKENevo ...................virtually no difference between car & cycle oils,'cept for the labels.

Very true, but for oils with a 40+ in it.

So, true for us.

Thumbs up Hey BluesFan

Yeah,..I believe it may have been YOU who mentioned the 40+ thing in another similar thread. I quess I did'nt think to mention that or have taken much concern with it because I just don't know anyone who runs any less than 40 in a scooter. Good point though...

Meanwhile you might want to note that you could have gone a little further with your reference to "Do Not run 10W anything... and written it as follows:

Do Not run 10W anything....in your bike VS other stuff !!!

I agree with the frequent changes, oil and filter at 2,500 miles.
Synthetic if you are concerned about heat, but Harleys 20/50 will do if changed regularly.

Default Amsoil Price

Here in Tucson I was charged $10.35 per quart as part of my 10,000 mile service. That was at a local shop of course. I think you can get it from a AMSoil dealer a little cheaper or even direct from Amsoil. Look around to find a mark up you think is worth the price. They also have an oil filter and air filter for HD's that is supposed to be really good. Haven't tried either one as of yet. Would love to hear the reviews from anyone that has.
