Default Overheating Big Bores

Anyone have any updates on the overheating big bore engines? I thought I read something about this in the magazine but want to know if there is anything more I need to do before upgrading.

Hi Bagger

A last minute note before my last adult beverage on this Wonderful Christams Eve..

If the tuning is correct and an oil cooler is present the temp can be kept in check no sweat..
How else can one explain my 120" staying at 185* in the 116* days here in the Phoenix Valley..

Merry Christmas

I've been hearing terrible things about stock Harley CVOs with the big engines. Something about engines overheating and the cylinder liners coming loose. Not good.

I have a 103 no oil cooler and run in Dallas in the summer temps can get hot. I have not had any problems. Like any aircooled engine avoid parade detail or getting stuck in big traffic it can plague any HD. The 110 CVO have had some issues which is not good.

MOCO has issued two recalls for the CVO 110 engines regarding the rear cylinder heating up. Depending on when your CVO was manufactured would depend on which recall pertains to your bike. The recalls involve CVO's produced in '07and'08.

Forgot, one of the more recent issues in AIM addresses the overheating problems with the CVO 110 engines.

overheating is influenced by many factors. Road surface temp, ambient air temp, combustion chamber temp and the ability of the engine to dissipate the heat. We can't do anything about road surface temp or ambient air temp but you can work on the other factors. The new EPA HD engines run lean, a lean engine generates more heat in the combustion cycle. By enriching the idle you can cool the engine slightly without causing ill effects on performance. Changing to a good synthetic oil which coats the interanal engine componets more completely, helps to dissipate heat. Once the heat is in the oil, an oil cooler helps to lower the operating temp, provided you are moving and have air flow thru the cooler. Yes, I run a stroker engine and have an oil cooler. They do get hot in heavy traffic.

Hi Sleep

The cooler fan web-site that was linked to also stated that oil coolers don't work if you're not moving.. And lotsa other articles and plain folk have repeated that same false wives tale..

I gotta dis-agree vigorously..

It is sooo easily de-bunked----- at any time while the motor is Hot and running but Not moving,, at idle in your shop, in the parking lot, in stopped traffic, it doesn't matter--- just reach down and grab a hand-full of the cooler or even the lines going to it..
Most times you won't be able to hold on for more than a sec..
The heat radiating from the cooler unit is dissapating into the air which means that it is Not going back to the bag..

Of course we all know that moving is best but they still work even while parked..
