I notice where the service manual mentions using a cam lock device to remove the fuel plate from the tank. Is it absolutely necessary to have this specialty tool or will something else work in it's place?

My 2007 FXDL, the fuel filter is in the fuel pump, which has to be removed from the fuel tank after draining the tank of fuel etc.

01 Ultra if I recall correctly manual calls for 30K. Bought mine used with 17K. Always had a loud pump whine when I initially turned on ignition and fuel pump went in prime mode. Bike started nosing over on hard acceleration around 21K. Replaced fuel filter, which I could hardly blow through, and solved problem. Now I have to listen to hear the pump run when ignition is turned on. If the pump has a distinguishable whining noise when ignition is turned on, I would replace the filter.

Changed my fuel filter at 37,754 km's and runs much better, lot more power. The bike was really running like crap before the change. Will start changing much sooner then later from now on, say at some 20,000 km's [12,000miles] or at the beginning of spring every year. Would not be good to be in the middle of no wear and the bike stops and will not run because of a plugged fuel filter, could also be very dangerous. I agree with Brock5ga change for sure when you start to hear the pump, but save the fuel pump do even before as I would think is not good for the pump. I would also think as the filter becomes clogged the fuel mix [AFR] would change, start to get leaner which is not good, and the engine would start to run much hotter.

Changed the fuel filter at 37,754 km's on my 2007 Dyna and the bike runs much better and faster too. The old filter was very dirty compared to the new one. I will be changing at say 20,000-30,000 km's rather then the 40 called for by the owners manual. I believe gas has more dirt in it then one might think. Better to change too often, which is better then being out some where and the bike won't start or runs like crap and you are stuck on the side of the road. It could also be very dangerous when passing etc if the engine shut itself off.
