Default Plugs and wires

Hey Guys

I need some info......I need to change the plug wires on my 88".I am thinking of putting on Hotwires and a higher quality plug..Does the resistance rating really make that much of a difference or is replacing with stock parts sufficient?

Gunny

Hey there, Gunny. The factory manual gives specs for ohms of resistance for spark plug wires. It is my understanding that (and I'm not an electronics guru) the stock ignition detects ionization across the plug gap to detect the onset of detonation and retards the timing when it detects it. If you stray very far from factory specs it could confuse the system. I have read that even the application of anti-seize on spark plug threads can throw it off. I use it anyhow, a plug seized into a head is a nightmare I don't even want to think about.
It has always been my opinion that there is a LOT of advertising hype surrounding fancy plugs and wires. Most won't make a dimes worth of difference in how your engine runs.
I tend to be very conservative with my modifications, as you can see from some of my recent posts I get into enough trouble as it is.lol

I second Shovel's notion...

Seriously...unless your bike's engine and/or ignition etc has been significantly modified, stick to stock plugs & wires or their after-mrkt equivalent. Because, other-wise, there's no benefit of any real value to be gained from any of the overly hyped "trick" stuff out there...'cept of course for the folks "selling" it...and it could wind up doing you more harm than anything else.

Hi Gunny

I've experimented with Hotwires on diff motors with No Ohm/resistance restrictions and found absolutely Zero diff by seat-of-pants..
I even Dual-plugged a couple of them and still-----Zero..!!
Kens prediction agrees with what I found..

I have also used the Nology Silverstone plugs along with the Hotwires--- still Zero..
I am sure Mike is right-on with his concern about newer sickles and their finicky electronic ignitions..

Here is a link that might be helpful..

Plug Wires

BTW---- I always use Never-Seize on plugs also..

i didn't like were my coil was at (soft tail) up by the oil bag. i move it in front of the oil filter in-between the frame. used auto wires (modified coil end). i can't tell any differences in performance. haven't been to the dyno to check timing. runs good.

Post some pictures of that coil relocation job, Greg. Your timing should be the same despite some change in wire length, at the speed current travels there should be no difference.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the info.....The Ads on the wires seemed too good to be true.We all know the saying.....If it sounds to good to be true,it probably is.

Ditto on the anti-seize.I use it on about everything I put back together.
