OK so I installed a Harley Oil cooler and everything went smoothly until I realized I didn't put the filter on so I cleaned up the mess put the filter on and refilled it, and fired it up. Every thing seemed ok until it got warm then it didn't want to idle correctly. It would not idle fast enough and would die. I let it cool and it worked fine again until it warmed up and right back to dieing when you weren't giving it gas on the throttle. Looking at the area I worked in and checking the manual it looks like it has something to do with the crankshaft position sensor. HD Part #32798-04. Can anyone shed any light on this for me. Is there something I did or didn't do to cause this. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to put it is a 2004 FXDI SUPER GLIDE.

See if you filled the crank position sensor connector with oil, possibly causing continuity between the pins, other than that I can't see any connection.Same thing with the stator plug.
OK I put dielectric grease on the Camshaft Sensor connector and i am still having the same problem. I ran the diagnostic codes and came up empty. Anybody think of a reason it will not idle? It also backfires when it gets hot after letting off the gas. More than the normal popping you hear.
Any other test or checks to run?
Thanks

Are you positive that you got the gasket for the oil cooler adapter in the right position? I have to ask. I"m not questioning but double-checking.
Did you refill oil to make up for removing the filter and the extra capacity of the cooler?
About 1/2 qt. or a little less depending on how much drained out of the filter. Don't overfill.
Are you positive that you did not damage the crank position sensor when removing and reinstalling the oil filter. The cooler adapter moves the filter further out towards the sensor. Certain oil filter wrenches could contact the sensor now.
Is anyone here sure that the crank position sensor could cause these symptoms? No idle and popping on decel.

T Bone thanks for responding.
There were no gaskets for the oil cooler adapter and none called for in the directions. It has two O rings. I drained all the oil and I refilled after I put on the oil cooler and after I pumped a half a quart on the ground I refilled it again. Did not hit the Crank sensor when taking off the old or putting on the new filter, of that I am sure. Cooler seems to be working and dropped temps about 20-25 degrees. Although these symptoms started after I put the cooler on it might not have anything to do with it. We might need to think outside the box and think what would cause it not to Idle and cause a lot of popping on deceleration. Still scratching my head!

Thinking outside the box here, like you suggested.... could it be a total coincdence and it is an intake leak???? and it just turned up After you did this work>??? Maybe bumped a vacuum hose and it tore a little... maybe???
Just a guess.

Thanks Uncle will check to see if any vacuum hoses are torn dislodged etc. Does anyone know if the Crank sensor would cause the bike to not idle correctly or pop during deceleration?
Thanks again

OK I have looked over all the parts around where I put on the Cooler. All looks OK. No vacuum lines anywhere around the area. I could not find any vacuum lines period. I did not take apart the voltage regulator connection or the Stator connector boot. If anyone thinks either of these might be a problem due to oil in the connectors let me know and I will pull them apart. Both seem to be shielded with a rubber boot. What say you all?

Dang, Cowboy. I've been racking my brains trying to think of something that you might look at that would cause these problems. I think your service manual has a description of the test to perform for an intake leak. I would try that to see if there was just a coincidental leak started right when you installed the cooler. There are no vacuum lines that I know of. I think it involves propane directed at the intake mating surfaces and if there is a leak the sound of the engine will change. Be careful not to flow propane near the air filter or you will get a false reading.
For the life of me, I don't see how the cooler could cause the symptoms you are experiencing.
The only other thing I could possibly see is the CPS Deutsch connector in the electrical caddy behind the regulator and if it got douched with oil.
