Default Loctite Question

Still working on gear drive install.Have question on use of green loctite on rear cam and gear, can you use red instead of green. Seems like if you needed to remove gear later that the green loctite would almost impossible to break loose. Need some advise on this one.Thanks.

Final gear to rear cam is set it forever in green. If you are going to play pulling gears, then use the red.

If you are going to run it forever in red, I would think that cam keyed and the way a screw stays tight on it's own, you might get away with it. Green acts the insurance policy which clears all doubt.

Remember when The Captain, Road Prison 36, played by Strother Martin in Cool Hand Luke said "What we've got here is failure to communicate"..
Hmmmm......

The green Locktite #290 says Low-strength and it's for already assemble parts..
There is a Green #294 also for pre-assembled parts with a Medium-high strength rate..

The Red, as Ace points out, is for permanent assembly..
Heat is required to loosen..

There is a green Loctite that is a "wicking compound" for parts that are already assembled, this is low strength.I was referring to Loctite sleeve retaining compound which is permanent.Neither of which you would want to use on the cam gear bolts.

If you look at a copy of the s&s instructions it says use 6odgreen loctite on the rear cam. Ace what do you use on gear drive installation.Seems to me when you press the gears on it is a tight fit anyway.

blue is low strength
red is medium strength
green is heavy duty.

Now this green low strength is a new one on me. I've used green for crank throw weights like the nut on the end of a H-D crank.

Old style is to punch both thread sides on the final torque. To remove, you drill the indent out so the threads move smooth. Like the screen [location] in some BSA cranks. You had to drill the plug's punch marks on one side of that crank throw to gain access to the screen. This was [the idea] way before Loctite.

Purple is for fasteners smaller than 1/4 inch.I use red on the threads of the cam & crank sprocket bolts, nothing on the sprocket to cam splines.

Guys thanks for all the info. New question, Im installing fueling pump and cam plate. Instructions say NOT TO USE LOCTITE on pump bolts or cam plate bolts. Reason being they say it interfers with stacking hieght. Anyone know why that would be. Seems bolts would work loose in time. All the factory bolts I took out had loctite on them. Any help would on this be great.
