Sure its not the starter leaking?

Is leaking on the front of back of the primary?

Inspection cover?

Hi Darren

My guess is the dealer is guessing as much as you and us..

Here's something you can do,, the dealer will prob Not take the time to do it..

Get on your back with a mirror and rag and flashlight and wipe every bit of oil you can off every inch of the Inner and Outer primary then let it sit overnight or even run it around for a short while,, but not tooo much,, cuz you want to be able to spot the source, the exact place where the oil is leaking when you get on your back again with that mirror and flashlight..

Could be between the Inner & Outer, could be from a leaking O-Ring tween the inner and motor case etc etc..

A trick I use is to get the area as clean as possible, then spray aerosol foot powder all over & go for a ride. The white powder makes it clear where the leak starts. You can also use leak detector & a black light, but most people don't have access to this.

P.S. I think you can eliminate the inspection cover as a source, seeing as the 08 FXD doesn't have one.

Good call on no insp cover. That is cause it has the self adjusting chain tensioner?

Stay on them to fix it. You're still under warranty for a little while aren't you?

That is cause H.D. figured out yet another way to make thing just just enough more difficult that MOST new customers/riders will PAY to HAVE things serviced......while cutting production costs just that much more.

Make sure to check to see if it isn't coming out of the back of the shifter rod that passes through the inner and outer primary. Sometimes the little gasket between the inner and outer cover shifter rod towers gets pinched in assembly and eventually leaks out of the hole where the shifter rod comes out of the inner and outer primary covers. This happened to me and it looked like the leak was coming from the primary gasket.
