Well, the 95 kit and the new S&S 510g cams are in the 99 flht and it runs great. The chain tensioner shoes were hardly worn and they were original to the bike. I guess I got lucky. The reason the engine light was staying on and causing the cam positioning sensor code to show up was due to a little oil that had leaked into the wiring conections below the cam housing.I went ahead and had the geared cams put in for the peace of mind and the fact that I don't have to have them checked every 20,000. I had a set of Hooker flow tuned slip ons that came with the bike. We replaced the stock pipes with the Hookers. Now it's a little too loud for our style of riding. I am going to explore some other possibilities, but I have to admit, I kind of like the bark those Hookers have. Thanks to everyone who sent the great advice my way.
This is my Granddaughter Sky, age 7. Can't walk, talk, or feed herself but look at that smile. Anyone care to complain about their lot in life? Not me!
3rd set of tensioners in it now (just did em myself in Nov. 08)
SE 203 cam in it since around 36,000 miles. Big bore kit at the same time.
(and associated bearing upgrades and cam chain gear)
Stock Heads. Every mile on em.
I'm finding that dealers are saying inspect the tensioners at 30,000.
The first set i changed at around 95,000 miles or so. The 2ndary shoe
was JUST begginning to ride on the metal pin. The 1 shoe was deeply worn
but still had life.
2nd set change last fall Nov. at 151,120 ample shoe pad material left after that mileage of 56k or so.
So, for my riding style 30,000 would be too soon. And 95,000 is too late.
So, I'm saying between 50 and 60K would be good for my particular set up.
I think the 203 cams were starting to show some wear on the lobes buy I
threw them back in there and shes running strong !
Compression tests showed 140 PSI with a hold on with your hand style tester.
It was a job to do the tensioners myself as i am no ace. And I had to rig and
install the stuff upside down on this press i rigged up.
Oils? I ran all kinds. Synthetic and regular. Car oil too. As long as it was 20w-50 I ran it. I've avg. oil changes to around every 2000 miles. Currently I have Valvoline 20w-50 MC oil in her.
Competitor: A guy I met with a 2001 Heritage Softail. Last I saw him few weeks ago he has 184,000 miles. Had some engine work last year at 164,000
counter-balancer bearing was going. He swears by Amsoil. Ran it from the git go.
More Info: Stock Oil pump. Cycle Shack bologna cuts (M pipe... not drags)
Stock carb. I'm getting 48-53 Mpg the way I got it jetted on the leanish side.
All you guys yakking (and whining about) heat and stuff ! Fergit it ! Ride and do your oil. You think that the 95 kits with a cam don't get hot? Keep it on the highway.
One day distance records. 900 miles and 820 miles and 812 miles were my best all day long one day gigs.
Other foibles and problems.
2 stators. 1 at around 40,000 and then again at 80,000. Ok since 2nd one.
(knock on metal) Started changing primary oil more frequent at 2,500 after that 2nd one figuring metalic metal stuff in clutch plates deposit might affect stator???
Clutch hub SPUN OUT. yes yes the splines literally stripped right out, (only time she left me stranded.) Ask Jamestown Harley if they remember that bike.
I figured jamming through 25 mph switchbacks on Rt. 50 east in WVA and Maryland area a week earlier was too much for them splines and they ripped loose, 1 week later.
So, where do i sit with Mileage ? I know I'm above average and I know I'm not the highest. Did AIM ever do a special on TC 88 Mileage competition? or Evos or harleys in general? I seen that million mile Evo article, but he ran 3 motors. What's the limits on mileage and displacement the current platform can run?

Hey man - I also ride a 1999 Low Rider and I love it. I do all of my own maintenance and repair work. My bike had a cam bearing failure at 34,000 miles (warrantied by harley and added 203s) and now I am at 70,000 miles. I have purchased new cam chain tensioners and I'm planning to do the job soon. I would like to ask you a few questions if you don't mind giving me a little advice on the job. Let me know if you are available. Thanks.
