Keep in mind there is a hydraulic tensioner upgrade for TC88 to the on used on TC96. That way you don't have to worry about crank shaft runout. I haven't heard of any problems with the new set up.

i have a 2000 road king and just had the tensions replaced at 54,000 mi.
along with the cam support plate, oil pump, cams, lifters, cam bearings and push rods. the info i got fr a friend at HD is the chains are the cause of the wear on the tensioners-they were never polished to a fine machine finish-also my stock oil pump doesn't pump real great at idle or low speeds.hd has a new
hydralic tensioner setup with a new pump and cam support plate.
not having enouugh $$$ for a gear drive i settled for oem parts ,se 211 cams
fueling lifters and adj. pushrods and new chains and tensioners-i was lucky that all the bearins were still in the cam case-the wear and tear on the other parts was real sad to see as i always change the oil etc and maintain the bike

hey, don't try to instll a gear drive by yourself... the cam chain tentions should be fine for 6K mi + if u use synthetic oil and amsoil is the best!!! I do these things all the time
they have a update kit from anderws to update to the hydrolic tentioners with a roller chain...might be worth looking in to!!!

Faithboy, if u decide to tackel this do not forget to change the inner cam berrings the stock ones are not good enoughfor the aftermarket cams... use torrenin berrings...(have all the rollers in them) HD decieted to save $4 a berring back in the late 80's or early 90's if they go out ( and they will) u will be buying a new set of engine cases...($760)
keep the shinny side up... moto

you know i just did my cams, i had an .003 runout on the pinion which was in the harley spec but seemed to make s and s nervous so i did some thing else. if you change cams the consensus is you do the hydraulic lifters. im going to put in fueling but ask around.
the inner cam shoe is very hard to see, my shoes showed little wear but pitting . and sure enough when i took the plate out the shoe showed some wear, some pitting, and i could see the dreaded crack starting, so i did the change out at the right time. the most sensitive part was putting in the inner cam bearings and getting the woodruff keys to seat properly. ask every one , devide their answer by the number of answers you get and that should be the close road, read the shop manuel. read the shop manuel.
the link below give some information and pictures on cam shoe issue, it is one of many web places that illustrate dealing with this problem, a how to.

yes do them , it doesnt make sense to uppgrade to the new shoes , why reward them, do gears or belts.

call powercommander @800-992-4993 las vegas time-they will tell you what map tp use there software is simple and you can download it online-if you have a pc- 111 you can use a usb cord and a 30 ft extension cord unless you have a laptop in your garage.when i bought my 2000 rk classic i put my own powercommander on ,downloaded a map-had it dyno'd at sturgis and my air /fuel was perfect,my hp & torque was better than i hoped for---good luck
