I can't say for sure, but what I heard at the dealer, it's because the first 5 gears are straight cut teeth and 6th is helical (slanted)cut to run quiter when in top gear. The sales guy was telling a customer looking at a new Ultra.

I have a 2007 FXD with just over 1,000 miles on it and am satisfied so far .... except for the fact that I can't locate a larger front fender for it. The bike is very peppy, but the new 6th gear will probably see little use except for road trips. There was a recall to re-program" some computer to achieve better performance in some manner or other. I paid little attention to it (but did have it done). The bike runs well. I am pleased with it. I am not a life long biker. I bought a new FLHRCI in 2000, logged somewhere between 35,000 and 45,000 miles (mostly solo) on it and traded it in for the FXD early last winter.

Wife took me to the HD dealer and said pick one. I had not been on a bike for 15 yrs. She liked the RoadKing but when she said she would only be on the back maybe 15% of the time I went with the Dyna Custom. I like the looks and handling. I have had it a month and have 1200 miles on it. I have had a few minor annoyances. 2 weeks in and a wire needed to be replaced in the right directional switch. Took it in for 1000 mi service and told them it sounded like there was either dirt on the pads or a rotor was warped. Haven't heard the noise from the breaks but they said it was common. I have only put 100 miles on since service so we will see if it returns. Sought of sounds like when you were a kid and one of the pads on your 10 speed would rub the rim in a spot. Other than that have had no issues. Shifts smooth and rides nice.

Smile 07 Ultra, no 5th gear whine, but does run hot

I own a 07 Ultra, 5th gear sounds the same as the other five (must be lucky), it does run hotter than my old 88 cu in (Harley says almost all complaints have come from Ultra owners). I haven't had a recall that I 'm aware of, but I did get the ECM torque modification down load suggested by Harley. Harley now also has a free software upgrade called the engine idle temperature management system (EITMS) that shuts off fuel to the rear cylinder during hot idle and when the motorcycle is stationary. I haven't had this installed as of this time. I owned a 06 Streetglide that had a pretty bad brake squeal, so far the 07 Ultra has none. I don't know if there has been a change to the brakes or just a different bike. My 07 Ultra has 4,000 miles on it and I think I will have the EITMS software upgrade done at the 5,000 mile maintenance.

I found the letter I received from Harley. The letter I received was dated November 27, 2006. This is a free calibration.

The refined calibration is to smooth the torque curve application in a manner that minimizes high shock loads to drive train components, which could cause engine damage. It will enhance the drive characteristics and, on some models, will improve fuel economy during certain steady state driving conditions. This was implemented on all Twin Cam models in production as of October, 2006 (this according to Harley-Davidson).

Love mine.....little over 2,000 on it with absolutely no problems. Very peppy. I installed PCIII USB, Rush 2" S/Os w/2" baffle, and K&N A/F at 1500 miles. Runs like a scalded dog. No noise in 5th gear. Sixth gear is useless except on hiways. Last bike was 89 Wide Glide so this one is a jewel.
