Default More Rods Than Choppers In Daytona

Yesterday was my first day in Daytona for Bike Week, and I was surprised to see more V-Rods in town than choppers.

While I realize this is an odd basis for ratios, but it tells me the chopper thing is on the decline and V-Rods are now gaining popularity - at least here in Daytona.

Curious what I see here during the week.

I will be testing a 2008 V-Rod later in the week and will also be curious how others here relate to the bike.

I think people are realizing that a $60K chopper isn't in most people's budget, or daily drivers, or long distance trekkers (especially if two up), and the performance - other than raw horsepower - just isn't there. VRODs have that dramatic styling, carry the Harley name, and have the performance of a sport bike (and sometimes more), and it's not their grampa's bike.

I think the V Rods are there first because they are faster. Give the air coolers a day or two to catch up.

Hmmm... could be a bit of truth in that.

And what Majic said. I wouldn't pay $10k for most of the customs, definately not over $15k for any of them. I LIKE having my passenger along every chance we get. Not to mention the V-rod draws the bigger crowd. Maybe American Chopper has burned everyone out?

To add to this - while in Daytona I did see some very tricked out V-Rods - they were really nicely done - I didn't have my camera with me but I was impressed. There were some that had really great paint jobs and I don't know V-Rods but I think I saw some with some very cool custom pipes....

Yeah, I think the fact that choppers hit the mainstream watered down their appeal quite a bit. What fun is it if you can't shock people a little with the spectacle of your chopper rolling up. A good friend of mine and I toyed with the idea of running a chopper shop over 25 years ago. We didn't come close to having the money to do it so we kept our jobs in the factory. Now everyone with any aptitude is in the business; It kind of loses its appeal when it's socially acceptable.

A couple of guys on here have really nice bikes. Stefy, the Italian lady on this month's AIM cover has an awesome V-rod. It's worth checking out 1130cc.com just to go through the gallery, but you have join the forum. Like any other bike, there are some amazing V-rods. Our Night Rod just gets us where we are going...quickly. I think the black on red gets a little more attention than usual because it's not all black or anodized aluminum. The yellow Street Rods really get a lot of attention. Admittedly, most of us refer to them as "flying bannanas", a term the riders have really adopted.

I agree her bike in AIM was great - very nicely done and so was the bike. - Ok I was kidding... it was great to see a bike that is ridden everyday - looks good and the owner has taken pride in her ride!!!!!

I took DesertSpeed's advice and checked out the member galleries on www.1130.com. I was a little disappointed that the majority of truely unique custom V-Rods looked like crotch rockets (full fairing, plastic parts, etc). The rest looked mostly stock. Very much looking forward to seeing some real Harley enthusiasts *cough... Buzz... cough* with a passion for customizing getting a hold of a V-Rod.

As for me... I want one. What a good lookin' bike!

John 1:14

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD.
