During the Summer of 80 I was home on Leave and my best friend had a Honda 750 Custom. A bike rag of the time (Buzz aren't you glad I didn't plug another mag?) said it would go 132MPH. Well I took it out on a long, lonely West Texas road and hammered down. I buried the 120mph mark and it kept climbing until it seemed like it was not increasing any longer and I rode it that way for a good 10 miles and then I let off of it. Turned around and did the same going back. I do not know how fast it actually went but it was too fast for that light of a bike and me. (I was 150lbs soaking wet)

Had the V-Rod speedo bouncing between 137-140 or so, that was all she had. Full throttle but did nit hit the limiter and seemed the gearing was tapped out. The bike gets there very quickly and happy to do it, been there many times.

My fastest however, was on a turbo Busa, last I saw was 180 and climbing and I $hit myself, in fact raised up a bit early and blew my glasses in half right off my face. I have never before that seen a tachometer AND a speedometer move together at the same rate. After that ride everything else seemed rudimentary.

Ah yes...the things we do when we're young and think we're invulnerable. Back in '81 I bought a Yamaha Seca 550, much slower than 600 class Japanese bikes they build today but quite a bit of power for the time, the downside is that the serious power didn't hit 'til 7000 RPM. It was my daily commuter and getting on the highway I would shift that 6 speed at the point where the peak horsepower was, I don't remember what RPM....way up there! The speedo only went to 85 in those days so once it pegged I'd watch the tach...mentally compute speed knowing the RPM to road speed relationship. If I kept my head tucked behind that bikini fairing the wind blast wasn't too bad but it gave you tunnel vision, 100 MPH was all I felt like giving it. When I was finally able to get the XLX in '85 I had to test its top speed (of course), I took it to 100 MPH and the wind blast gave me a real workout...and talk about vibration, I began to be concerned that some of the bolts would come undone, once was enough.
Of the many things I like about Harleys is that even when short shifting them they will stretch your arms with that beautiful torque, I don't care abou top speed or ET's...just gimme that torque.

Oh yeah being a previous rice rocket owner, speed and stunts is why I got rid of them. When I could run from Toledo, Oh to Flint, MI in 40mins. Speedo never under 130 and many many times in the 160+ area. I soon decided that it was becoming stupid. That the risk out weighted the fun. I had too much to loose from moments of speed, stunts, lane splitting, and running from the cops. Sold it and never looked back.

Hey guys I'm sitting here reading th responses and the last two made me think of something...I'm not encouraging anyone to go out and fly...just to share their experiences when they did.

I'm only 33 and I got the HD because ur riding position is set up to just cruise...as opposed to a crotch rocket ur already set up to go fast especially when someone else on a rocket buzzes by you you start to get the itch to speed up.

I've worked in the local ER and for such a small island there are alot of bike crashes...and I've seen some crazy ones...and I'm not even talking about the high speed ones those are in a league of their own. I'm talking about the ones at slower speeds...those are crazy...at 30-35mph I've seen shattered tib fibs, spiral fractures and even a scalping by a coconut tree(guy had no broken bones just a lot of scrapes and bruises but he got scalped).

So please continue to share have fun and please ride safe.....
