Default Lead weights to be eliminated by EPA

For those interested , This came across my desk, it is Automotive but looks like the future for wheel weights, .
Chrysler Eliminates Use Of Lead Wheel Weights
Chrysler LLC recently completed its program to eliminate the use of lead wheel weights from its vehicles, switching to more eco-friendly substitutes in its products sold world-wide.
The move puts Chrysler in full compliance with a voluntary program to be announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Detroit August 29. The National Lead-Free Wheel Weight Initiative calls for elimination of lead wheel weights in vehicles by the end of 2011.
“This is the culmination of a two-year effort to move to environmentally friendly alternatives in the production of our vehicles,” said Reg Modlin, Director, Environmental Affairs for Chrysler LLC.
“We are very supportive of EPA’s efforts and have pledged to work with suppliers and others such as tire stores and service departments to encourage the use of alternatives to lead weights throughout the lifetime of our vehicles.”
Wheel weights, which are used to balance the wheels of a vehicle to improve ride and handling, can sometimes be dislodged on rough roads. Wheel weights made of lead, while very effective and low cost, have raised concerns about lead entering the environment.
A 2006 U.S. Geological Survey report estimated that 2,000 tons of lead from wheel weights ends up on the nation’s roads each year, though there are no studies to document environmental damage.
Chrysler now uses wheel weights made of steel and zinc.

Default Lead

It doesn`t matter that there is no environmental damage from lead wheel weights we should still ban them because lead is toxic ? Is there any record of someone eating a wheel weight ? Is wheel weight ingestion a problem somewhere in the world ?
Lead is toxic. Lead can enter your system in two ways. You can inhale lead oxide or vapor. You can ingest it. If you spend your life on an indoor pistol range shooting lead bullets and the range has poor ventilation you could get lead poisoning. Most of the lead would come from the primers not the bullets.
Lead oxide occurs when lead is heated above 800 degrees. Casting bullets or wheel weights does not involve temps anywhere near that.
OK
1 Make sure the paint you or your children eat is lead free.
2 Wash your hands after handling lead or don`t eat with your fingers.
3 Shoot on indoor ranges with good ventilation.
4 When casting bullets don`t overheat the metal.
5 Don`t drink the water in most parts of the world that still have lead pipes.

Ummmm.... please correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't lead come from the environment?
I must have missed the news flash of when they started growing it in labratories.

Well yeah, lead comes from the environment...so does asbestos. Both these items,as with many things we encounter, are very useful when used properly, but harmful if improperly used.
Sometimes it takes a while to work out suitable substitutes. I used up my old supply of lead solder and had to use the non-lead variety to do some plumbing a while back....to my surprise the new solder worked just as well, even for a guy like me who only sweat solders pipes once every 5-6 years.
How well the wheel weights work out we will find out. Slightly less dense metal will mean the physical size of the weight will be slightly larger.

I dunno. I been using lead weights on my fishing line for years.........In my mouth, swallowed a sinker or two...........Now I forgot what I was going to say.....Must be the lead.

I never had the urge to eat paint chips or Glue.

All medicines are poison, you can die drinking too much water.
My ex father in law had a fit, when I bought my first bike. Kept telling me how it would kill me.
He died at 47 of a massive coronary during an act of passion.
What is my point, Daaaa, I'm with JC don’t remember.
