Thanks...I was'nt aware of that. Are those dots on motorcycle as well as car & light truck tires ?

Tbone
My guess is that NEW weights may not have been required...but that there are original weights still on your wheel...no !?!

Just an observation---- your previous posts were so full of advice and explanations, which at first glance would seem that you know what you're talking about. But...! --- you didn't even know about the balance dot on tires?? Wow, that's very basic. I am glad you have learned something here.

In theory they should equalize each other, but how does the tire or tire manufacturer know how much of a low spot there is on that particular wheel that it's being installed on?
They don't know how much but, if you match them up, you will be putting a lot less weight for balance, if necessary, than if you don't match them up.

You have guessed correctly Evo. One tire actually did not require any weights at all because it miraculously balanced as mounted. I suppose they used the old weights on the other two. Even for new weights, the price is only small change. Rather than $65, it would probably only be around $70. Heck, I pay that amount in tax at 8.5%.

Yep..that's pretty much what I thunk

In my lame defense...had'nt mounted & balanced tires OR trued wheels (incld'g lacing) in a LOT of years, Some things learned..,some things not learned...some things forgotten...some things (like this) of little consequence...some things of major consequence...and thankfully this site as well as the members exist for JUST those reasons.

When you say you're glad I learned "something" here...uhhh YEAH me too!! I'm sure it will make life a bit simplier. BUT...noting that in spite of my not being aware of the "dot thing" my wheels & tires have always (when done myself) come out well balanced and true...when you callously infer that I don't know what I'm talking about over such a basic yet minor issue (in my mind) you're grossly underestimating me,overall...and crudely stepping over the line...especially when (not thought of to mention) my admitted "ignorance" of the "dot thing" never kept me from shifting a tire around on a wheel randomly (?) to shift it's weight when it seemed I was using too many weights...obviously,now,the HARD way.

Thanks not so much for your unecessary input on this one...and I hope YOU'VE learned something here.

I knew about the dot, I have heard that lining it up with the valve stem gets it balanced right 9 out of 10 times. Anyway I decided to mount the tires myself. I do all my own maintainence work , even installed a primary chain tensioner. I guess I just like the satisfaction that comes with doing it yourself. It will be a couple of weeks before I tackle the tires . I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for all the input. Oh yes, I've been "learning" right along. Quite the education-- yes, quite the education. And YOU, on the other hand, have misinterpreted my remarks. A wise man will never place words in another man's mouth.
But I'll stick around, in time you might learn what I'm all about, too. I'm quite sure this is a place to share knowledge and experience, that's why I'm here.

My apologies if I mistook you. However when someone says something like "at first glance it would seem that you knew what you were talking about. But...!---you did'nt even know about the balance dot on tires??" etc, etc. I would'nt call that me putting words in anyones mouth.

So "anyways"...stuff happens...this seems to have been a "understandable-misunderstanding" on my part... here's hoping we can put it behind us and "live happily ever after"...okay ??

I'm good with that. Sometimes when you cram a bunch of people together in tight quarters, they tend to jam shoulders, but don't really mean anything by it. Nome sain? We don't know each other yet, so it's best we get to know each other before we go beating on each other.

When I first started mounting my own tires I didn’t know about the dot.
In all honesty don’t think it matters much.
The shop that was mounting my tires before I started doing my own, put one on backwards, then mounted a front on the rear.
That is when I realized I knew as much as they did and felt I could do no worse.
And yes that is why we are in here to learn, this is where I learned about the dot on the tire. In an internet group.
