Default Tire Care

often wonder if the products available to whiten the white walls, or tire shine the black is approprate to use on cycle tires. Would the bleach eventually crack the tire......would the shine make the tire too slick causing a problem while turning? Should I be concerned?

You definitely do not want to use any of the silicone based, shiny tire dressings on a bike tire, especially on the tread area... just about instant suicide. I'm not sure about what effect the whitewall bleaches would have, but my instincts tell me that they are probably OK since the front tire is only good for a couple of years max. I'v alway used a detergent and steel wool.

"Poorboy" is good and bio-degradable. Pretty much any whitewall clearner you can get at an autoparts store will work.
Lemeck has it right about the tire dressing - NEVER put any on the tread and stay away from silicone-based products if you can. My local HD dealer sells the stuff they put on the tires to get them all pretty for the show room floor. It's like $6 for a big can of it.
DON'T spray it directly on the tire because you will get overspray on the tread. Spray it onto a rag then applt it with the rag.

I noticed that I have a YELLOW tint on my rear tire whitewall. I also noticed that my friend has the same. I thought that it was the exhaust pipe that is causing this, but my exhaust is only on one side of the tire and the yellow is on both sides. I tried steel wool with a cleanser, and I also tried bleach-white. I also purchased that new bleach pen for laundry spots....neat idea, but nothing seems to work. I have never heard of PoorBoy -would this be my solution?

I have had big whitewalls for years and have tried many products, Spray 409 works good but I have found "Vim" and a vegatable brush to be the best and then I finish up with a good rinse to get rid of the fine grit then an application of "No Touch Tire Foam" and I do coat the whole tire, tread and all and have never had a problem of slippage. Steel wool leaves lines that look like pencil on whitewalls.

ya'll are going to laugh. I've heard this although I haven't tried since I run blackwalls. Any cleanser like comet, ajax etc. and a decent sized drive way stone, cleans them well. It has to do with stone/gravel. I suspect it maybe the calcium in the light grey stone that does the trick.
