Default Kidney Belts

Sure, they look old fashioned and kinda cool. But does anyone still wear kidney belts on the longer rides? I'll be riding over 5 hours on Monday up to Lake Placid, NY and am planning on wearing one to save my back and ....

Hi Buzz. Yes I try to remember to wear my kidney belt on longer rides. I've had one since the early 70s when I had kidney surgery which weakened the muscles for a while. I think it can help prevent problems over the long run. Regarding the old fashioned look, that's fine with me; I'm partial to A2 (WW2 aviator) jackets and goggles.

I hear a lot of Older Editors wear them! Just kiddin Buzz.

I bought a middle of the roadf on for my wife after her back surgery. She only wore it a bit and said it did not do much good. I gave it a try and I felt the same except my belly button sweated more. I think they are better for off road bumps and jars.

Yes, old editors do wear out. That goodness we can get re-soled once in a while after a few days on the road without a computer ;-)

Younger editors wear them too.

Thanks to a car wreck many years ago, I have a bad disc that acts up after sitting for too long in one position. For cycling, I use a neoprene compression belt to keep my back as tight as possible. It's not as uncomfortable as the heavier leather support belts, and it provides a sufficient amount of lower back support. As a matter of fact, I can't ride without it.
