Default Helmet suggestions

Anyone have a suggestion for a good DOT legal shorty helmet that does not make a person look like a mushroom?

Great question! Unfortunately, everyone's head is different. The only thing you can really do is try 'em on. There are two basic shapes for 1/2 helmets (for HD helmets, anyway)... round and oblong. The round ones make me look like the spastic kid on a bicycle, but my girlfriend looks great in 'em. The oblong ones have the opposite effect.

Is this for safety, or to meet state helmet laws? If for safety, start with finding something that fits right... snug but not constricting. And I would highly recommend not buying a helmet you haven't tried on. Limits your choices, I know. But ill-fitting helmets can be dangerous.

John 1:14

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD.

The only helmet that might be safe and look good might be that carbon fiber helmet that started about a year ago. I don't have any experiance with it or know anyone who does, just saw it in a mag. I know thats not much help but it is something to check out. I am having the same issue with mine.

I have a decent shorty made by RDX that is DOT but it just makes you look like less of a mushroom head than the other ones. More like a porcini than a ****ake. I also have an English retro pudding head type I got from Jafrum that has a DOT sticker on it. It's pretty small and makes you look like a peckerhead although with some cool shades you look like a cool peckerhead.

Interesting censoring software at work here in the above post. It converted the proper name for a well known Japanese mushroom, which I will now call Sheetake, and made it into ****ake. It left in peckerhead however.

Another good reason to ride a V-rod: a full-face doesn't look out of place, but the mushroom cap does!!

I've come to a point in my life that I care more about keeping my head intact rather than looking good. I've worn no helmet, those half helmet vanity helmets that are worthless and Dot/Snell 3/4 helmets. Now I wear a full face Shoei helmet. I don't look cool but I definetely feel better at the end of a hot or cold day. No more red face for two days from wind and sunburn. I know I must sound like a buzz kill but I like having the skin attached to my head.

I have a nice full face Bell Apex that does indeed give me a real sense of confidence as far as safety goes. If I think I'm going to be out really pushing the bike in the corners or if the weather is a little iffy that's the helmet I wear. The onlly problem I have with the full face and 3/4's is that they are so big that your head really gets buffeted around by the wind blast and when you turn your head to look off to the side your head gets jerked around sideways.

I've gone down both with and without helmets back in the pre helmet law days so I know the value they represent. Also one of my sisters was an RN working with rehabbing quadraplegic patients and she said more of those folks were MC accident victims than anything else.

Still, there is nothing like flying down the freeways without a helmet of any kind. If you haven't done it you can't even begin to imagine the feelling. That's why people (myself included) wear those stupid little novelty helmets.
