Wow, now that was a brillant statement if I ever heard one !....Oh for the record 'frisco' I rode a '58 pan for years and while nice, I wouldn't trade the comfort and reliability I have now. I will agree though that back in those days 80% of the problems were easily diagnosed and alot were 'fixable' along the road !

As far as wearing a 'watermelon' on my head, you betcha ! No attitude here, your right to choose is just that, yours. It's always easy to spot the 'newbies'.....shorts, tank top, open toe sandals and no helmet !

There three types of riders...

1) those that that have gone down and lived to tell about it

2) those that have gone down....and didn't

3) those that have yet to go down

For those that fall into category #3, I pray you remain there...Ride safe.

Interesting reply..
I addressed Glenbo but if you wanna jump in be my guest..
You stated--- "......no attitude here" but it seems that you really do have one and uh,,why mention the '58 Pan.. That supposed to impress me.???

It seems to me that many guys (not all thank heavens) that Choose to wear a lid get defensive, then I have to tell em to climb back down before they make a fool of themselves and repeat a bunch a cute little sayings and other crap,,,,, Oh, wow,, you already stated those cute little nuggets.. Imagine that..
As far as No.3.. As I stated in a similar thread ,, I've deen down a group a times and only slightly bumped my noggin Once in over 32 years of building these devil machines and waaay well over 300,000 miles in the seat.. Perhaps you should read more of these threads before you speak, ya might learn something..

Now,, if you got a gripe pal don't beat around the bush-- tell me what's really on your mind..

OR--

You can contribute to this site in a rational manner,, perhaps even with answers to tech questions and show us what you learned on that '58..
Your choice baby..

BlueBob got my reply just exactly right. I don't give a flying pig fart if someone doesn't wear a helmet. That's their call and I'll defend their right to make it to anyone. If someone denies the safety factor, that's great. But the statistics can't be denied. Those who cite some story about someone who was in a wreck and died because they were wearing a helmet, which they got from their buddies best friend's cousin's neighbor down the street who heard about it at work tend to be, at best, anecdotal, and more likely just gossip and wishful thinking. There's good reason why people in healthcare call them donorcycles.

With that out of the way, I don't feel that my 41 years of riding both on and off road, with a few miles under my butt, a few small laydowns, and a little bit of pavement rash a couple of times, give me a little bit insight into much of anything, but I feel, and this is only my opinion, that those who have a $30K-$40K chopper (built by someone else), who ride only from beer joint to beer joint on weekends, as loudly as they can, and stand around in front of each beer joint posing for all the passersby, are posers, just that. They are the same people who don't understand why that beautiful combo sprocket and disc brake on the rear doesn't work well when they have too much chain lube and it's dripping down on the pads. It's fun to watch them try to drive in a parking lot, walking their expensive toys while others just ride in and park. It's even more fun to watch them finally get the bike parked, get off it, and walk away only to hear it fall over and dent several others. How many times do you have to park on hot asphalt to learn it gets soft? Do men my age (57) who have just taken up motorcycling really believe that getting that expensive new bike will remove that 70 pound beer belly and put their hair back to make them young, slim, and beautiful again? Turns out that they're still a fat, bald, silly-looking older guy with an expensive bike. That's enough, I don't need to get on any further rant. These are my opinions, and if anyone doesn't like them, that's their right. I don't give a crap whether you don't or not, and if the board admin wants to kick me off here for posting this in the wrong place or being a little bit opinionated, that's their right, too. Stay safe and healthy.

I couldn't give a rats rear end about impressing you, merely pointing to the fact of your statement about the "good old days" when bikes were less dependable, that while I enjoyed the '58 I don't want to go back.

"Cute Nugget" as well ! FWIW, this thread is about 'helmet disscussion' , therefore We all are intitled to our opinion, YOU and the rest of us. I support the right to choose as well.

My appologies for the perceived irrational manner of my previous post. Have a nice day !![/QUOTE]

Well I guess I might as well throw in my 10 Cents. Gas went up so my 2 Cents just jumped to 10. Anyway........

3) those that have yet to go down? BullSh!t. Not all bike riders will go down. Thats like saying everyone who smokes cigs will die of lung cancer. The odds are better if you dont ride or smoke.

Here we had mandatory lid laws, but I wear my even in the US and Asia where I do not have but I do cause it is my choice. I do not tell anyone what to, or not wear it is their choice.

Here we have the ones on thongs shorts they will learn the hard way not cause sme one tells them to wear boots and jeans at a miminum.

And for the guys that did not ear a lid and now do they love to preach they're like a reformed smoking. OH the Dangers .....

Default I always have my Shoei RJ-Air on

When riding my motorcycle. I firmly believe in safety first, last and always when operating my bike. Every biker should be able to choose whether he wears a helmet or not, but should think about the reasons for his decision.
