Back in the 1980s (I think) I wore an old Shoei full coverage helmet where the entire front section would pop up. I was told this type of helmet was discontinued to do legal liabilities.
Now I see they are back and sold here int he US by a number of manufacturers.
I am curious what people here think of these pop up helmets - pros and cons?

from what I've seen of the modular helmets I like em. The full face opens up instead of just the visor leaving you able to talk to people, smoke, drink, just about everything good about a half helmet but then the safety of a full face on the move. There are some really nice designs out there now most of em that I've seen at the Harley dealerships, seem very sturdy.
Protection of a full face with the comfort and convenience of 3/4... what's not to like?
Both Nolan and HJC make REALLY slick ones with plenty of vents and built in flip-down eye shades.

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD. ----Abraham Lincoln
I have a KBC modular as they are called. I wear glasses and had to remove them to put my helmet on and off. I lost a pair once leaving them on my lap and forgeting to put them back on. That was an expensive lesson! With the flip up, I can leave my glasses on all the time. It's also great to flip it up to talk to your fellow riders at lights.

If I were to buy a full face style helmet it would be a modular. I've tried to warm up to a full (modular) but can't seen to after trying a few on. Went with a Shoei 3/4 RJ Platnium-R for highway/touring wearing. Pop-ups are the way to go if you wear this style of helmet. I have to admit though from the riders I've encountered wearing full face helmets, none were pop-ups.

The problem I have with modular is that in a crash I'd worry the face shield would come off easy. The whole reason I wear a full-face is for protection. Once you have had a full-face save your face, and seen the damage whatever it is you almost ate caused to the helmet, you worry about things like that.
I like the modular helmets..Last fall I did a lot of research on them and ended up with a HJC Sy Max II..great helmet..the front flips up or you can just flip up the shield like a FF..it also has an interior drop down sun visor which is great.ventilation is very good and if its real hot and you are at a light or in traffic or something moving slow you can flip the front up to keep cool
Since buying this helmet I have not worn my 3/4 or 1/2 again I like this one so much.
