Default Winter Riding Gear

We got about 6 inches of snow Friday and another couple of inches more predicted for today. No way I can ride in this snow, but figure after the roads are cleared I will be able to sometime in the next week.

There are a lot of us who live and ride in the frozen north, so I was curious what riding gear others wear when the temperature is near or below freezing?

For me it's an electric vest, long heavy leather jacket with liner, gauntlet thick winter leather gloves, turtle neck shirt, long thermal underwear, winter boots and a full coverage helmet.

Default Frozen north ?????

Hey Buzz,

If I were to ride in the north my first call would be to NASA to borrow a suit. Maybe if I promise not to drop the tools????

Rode today with a long sleeve T shirt. Have a ride planned for Christmas day. Might need heavy T shirt. Maybe not.

Nasa might be interested in your outfit.

When it's below freezing here I ride with a Harley Nevada leather jacket over modern long underwear shirt and long sleeve shirt covered by a polar fleece vest. I wear a balaclava to cover my chin and throat down inside the jacket. For my hands I use leather winter gloves that cover the ends of the jacket sleeves to keep the air from blowing up into them. I wear jeans over modern long underwear and leather chaps over that. I wear my usual leather pull on boots and regular socks.
When I get to work I take off the leather and wear carhart insulated coveralls if we are going out in the boat that day. I switch gloves to insulated gore-tex gloves to keep the hands warm and dry when picking up nets. I have some thinsulate insulated LaCrosse rubber boots to keep my feet dry and warm and I wear a military surplus insulated helmet liner over my balaclava for my head.
Boat or bike, it's pretty similar.

I live about 10 miles from work, when it's below 40 or so I ride with insulated bib coveralls and jacket with a face mask and goretex insulated riding gloves and boots. As a rule I don't ride in the sleet/snow or the threat of it, there's just something about having that thing on top of me instead of me on top of it!

I draw the line at 35 degrees. My work is only 6 1/2 miles away. I'll ride in the morning(5:30 am) only when I know it will be warmer when I get off at 4:30 pm. Usually its in the high 40's or in the 50's. Once it snows here(OHIO) and the streets have been salted, I put the bike away till spring, usually late March or April.

Depends what you mean by cold or how far you have to ride.

Under 40 and above 15 degrees. Full Face Helmet. Poly Prop long sleeve shirt and sweatshirt. Leather chaps and jacket. Wool socks/Redwing Boots. Heated gloves.

Now if its below 15 I change out the Leather Jacket to a Helix one. Carhart quiltlined bibs. I add a pair of Gortex socks under the wools and put on the Danner Gortex Boots.

Been snowing on and off the last few weeks and below zero. Roads are just nasty. I have been grounded for a bit. Looks like I will be grounded longer with more snow coming in. Winter continues to suck more the older I get.

Time to relocate and rent a shed out behind Frisco's or Wrights.

I have an old Eddie Bauer down insulated leather jacket. I don't go riding if it's under 45 but that jacket will do the job. Full face helmet too.

My last ride this season was Dec 2 at 32F and that could be my low temp limit! 2 T-shirts, fleece hoodie, leather jacket with liner. heavy gloves, riding boots. I picked up a pair of leather pants a couple years ago and use them when it gets cool. Yeah, I know. Kind of kinky looking but they sure do a good job covering where the chaps don't! Either jeans or sweat pants under them work well.
Going for either the electric jacket or vest next year along with heated gloves. I've looked at a few options. Any opinions on Helmet House/Synergy?
