Well gear is just as a much a debate on cruiser forums as it is on sportbike forums. This is definately "food for thought".

You can put your Full Face Helmet, Leather Jacket and Chaps with your super duper Harley Boots on and ride in this 114-125 heat. I won't. Yes it is a risk we take but it is either ride "Unprotected" or pass out from heat stroke. I will take my chances with the road rash.

Would someone explain what mid evil gauntlet that this person should have worn the last picture to protect his wrist from that severe of injury. I guess I will have to get on the History Channel and see.

Gas Man in the Helmet thread you said I still support the choice. However, I think the rider should have to register that choice with his/her state and only be given the choice with some waiver or insurance proof of some kind. Certainly this may irritate some of the old schoolers but in this day and age I, a tax payer, just don't want to have to pay for the next guys decision choice.

I get tired of people wanting to have me register with the government because THEY don't approve of my choices. Next maybe take away the kids because I am so irresponsible that I don't wear a helmet then maybe I am a risk to my kids too. You make all these snowboarders, Bicyclists, hang glider, parachutist, kids driving while texting etc register and then talk to me about not wearing a helmet. Guarantee you are spending more on these pursuits with your insurance than you are us lidless people. I am tired of WAYYY TOO MUCH Government interference with our lives and people who say well I don't do it so regulate it. Well hold on because they will eventually get to something you do like and there won't be anybody to stand with you because we were all regulated out.

The poem was published in a 1955 book by Milton Mayer, They Thought They Were Free.

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;

And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;

And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;

And then... they came for me... And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

OK off my soap box. I now return you to your Regularly Scheduled Program.

Feel free to call Homeland Security as I already fit their published profile.

Wearing gear is definitely a plus if you go down. I personally believe in helmets but respect your choice to choose. When it's hot here in CT (6-8 weeks) I wear a long sleeve denim shirt while riding. I know it's not much protection be it's one layer before road contact with my skin in case I do go down. When it cools down I add layers like a denim jacket or my leather when it's colder. Wearing gear will help to some extent unless you hit a wall or car at 50mph. I don't understand riding in short pants and no shirt, but to each his or her own.

I don't wear full face helmets and leather from head to toe anymore. But its the choice we all take on which level of gear or no gear.

I too don't like too much govt however, I also don't want some rediculous insurance rates for riders cause too many have sued somebody else because a certain rider decided to not wear a helmet. Lawsuits or un paid medical bills from a rider with no health insurance. I'm adjusting my POV for the WAY IT IS. Till this nation can get rid of stupid lawsuits, that do nothing but cost the general population money, we will have to play ball their way.

If those that don't want to register for no helmets. Then allow me to tell my insurance I always wear a DOT, allow me to get a discount on my insurance. If you think that after big money lawsuits by severely injured riders don't raise all of our rates, then perhaps you need to come out from under that rock. I simply don't want to have to pay for such.

Bottom line... I choose to wear helmets 99% of the time (I must add that 1% no, because I tried no helmet a few weeks ago in ohio and it was... OK.) I don't care if anybody else wears one. But if they don't have health insurance I don't want to have to foot their medical bills for their choice or pay higher insurance prems.
