I have also been in, under, and around her. She is one cold blooded lake. If you have her in sight you will at least need a Jacket 9 times out of 10. I know the Minnesota side pretty good. I try and get to Grand Marais at least once a year. On the Minnesota side Take MN-61 from Duluth all the way to Canada. It is a two laner with lake view most of the way. A number of small towns with hotels and campgrounds. Can get kind of pricy in July. I have never had a problem getting a room in Duluth or Grand Marias. Campsites fill up fast.
If you head west away from the lake to some of the old mining towns like Hibbing or Virgina camp sites come pretty easy. Nice roads to explore around the once open pit mines. It will be about 100 miles out of the way. The view is worth it.
I know the roads around the lake might be under some sort of construction. They are old roads and get tended to anually. Getting through is not bad. But you may have to clean your bike after. Some of the dirt is nasty and hard to get off. Its the red clay looking stuff thats bad.
It is heavily forrested. Deer, Moose and bear may come out and say Hi. I believe their is a book available for motorcylists that have a route around the lake. Sorry I forget the title.
Go during the week. The two laners are swapped with campers friday through Sunday.
