Anyone thinking about a Route 66 tour this summer?

I'm riding to Sturgis from Ontario, then back to Chicago to start Route 66 and on to LA. I figure on taking 2 weeks to do the Route 66 part, the month of August total. I'll ship my bike home from CA. Has anybody done this?

I have the tour books and maps. Has anyone tried the downloadable GPS sets? I was thinking about getting a TomTom for the trip.
