Default Cross Country Charity Ride On Old Indian Motorcycle

Just heard about this and figured it might be something worth checking out or supporting if you are so inclined. Here is the press release I just got:

The adventure will challenge the reliability of a 60 year old Motorcycle to travel across America. This is a non-profit challenge to raise as much sponsorship funds for the Kosair Childrens Charity. The motorcycle used is an ‘Indian’ - Americas first Motorcycle Brand since 1901.

The journey will set-off on 1st August 2009 from New York heading towards Chicago, then via ‘Route 66’ to Los Angeles. Kosair Charity: Provides highest quality healthcare for underprivileged children (Kosair Charities: Children's Health Care). Our continued support is needed to make a difference to these innocent children. Sponsorship: We invite Corporate and individual sponsors to support this challenge.

Corporate sponsors will be able to promote their Brand image via TV exposure, newspaper, magazines, website and by advertising material on the convoy. Route: Central Park New Yor City NY, Brookville PA, Toledo OH, Gary IN, Chicago IL, St.Louis MO, Oklohoma City OK, Amarillo TX, Albuquerque NM, Flagstaff AZ, Los Angeles Long Beach CA. Approximate distance 2,800 miles. Estimated travel duration is 3 weeks. Motorcycle: 1949 Indian Vertical Twin Scout, lightweight Model 249, 440cc air cooled. Standard Motorcycle with original factory specifications.

Crew: Lead rider Dr CD Wickramatillake, from Kentucky (Scientist, adventure traveller and fund raiser; past adventure / overland experiences include Europe, Great Britain to Sahara - North Africa, East Africa, Asia and East Australia adventures); John Cooksey, from Kentucky (Retired police officer and ex-trans-American truck driver), and Dr M. Wicks, from Cambridgeshire - Great Britain (Medical Doctor and Surgeon with expedition medical training). Support crew vehicle will be a GMC SUV with a trailer for amenities and some spares.

Participation: Members of any American Motorcycle club may participate in the challenge. They can join the main group during any part of the journey, by donating $1 per mile per motorcycle participation, with all proceedings to raise funds for charity. Participants will need to sign a disclosure form. Certificates will be issued to all those who participate in the challenge.

Contact Information C D Wickramatillake, Challenge Coordinator, Vintage Ride 2009, 500 Country Lane, Louisville, KY 40207, Tel – 502-544-1801, email- cdwickrama@hotmail.com
