Default Barber Motorcycle Museum

I am sitting in my hotel room just outside Birmingham, AL this morning getting ready to visit the Barber Motorcycle Museum here in town for the first time.

I rode in from San Antonio, TX Monday night and covered the 900 or so miles from Monday night to Tuesday night on a 30 year old motorcycle I bought on ebay - quite a ride.

I am looking forward to checking out the museum and race track and plan on running an article on the museum in an up-coming issue of American Iron Magazine. I have been wanting to visit this place for years.

You'll enjoy it. It's an amazing place - I've been there twice and plan on going again. Both the track and the museum are world-class. Looking forward to reading your impression of the complex.

Spent several hours there yesterday and was blown away! It is too much to take all in in one or even two days. GREAT assortment of bikes and cars from very early to current and even a few movie bikes too.

Stunning facility and wonderful buildings and real nice Southern hospitality with the staff too.

If you are thinking of going to the Barber Museum in Birmingham, AL - just do it and bring a camera.

Why, what's so unusual about San Antonio?

Actually I bought a motorcycle from a guy who lives in Boerne, TX (just outside San Antonio) and picked it up to ride it back 2,000+ miles to Connecticut. Will write about it in RoadBike our other motorcycle magazine.

Great ride (other than the horrific rain, lightning and flash floods Monday evening when I rode out of town) with visits to Barber Museum in Birmingham, AL and Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley, NC.

Left San Antonio on Monday evening and got to Connecticut late Saturday night.

Nothing unusual about it, just my home, and never read about SA much in the motorcyle posts or in your magazine. Can you tell us a little about the bike?

1979 BMW R100RS. Just a cool old bike I have always admired since a buddy of mine bough one new in the late 1970s. Not replacing any other mtorocycles I still have, just bought it for fun.

What's unusual about San Antonio? Well, I was stationed there for a while in the Army (Ft Sam Houston). Buzz, you may have missed the River Walk - the river goes through downtown and there are bars and restaurants built into the bank. You can ride a barge down the river, eat dinner and listen to music. Beautiful gardens too. The Alamo was interesting. Then there is Mission Trail - it had 7 missions, if I remember, that were each a day's walk away from each other so the friars had a place to stay when traveling. The missions were several hundred years old and some were still used for religious service. I had a used-up old Triumph and used to ride all over Bexar county. Ride year 'round.

Going to the Barber museum this weekend.
