Default March Issue

I do a regular amount of riding through NYC myself. The points of information in the March Safety Skills are definitely good ones to keep in mind. One other thing to remember is do not swerve for pigeons. If they can't get out of they way too bad. That's from a past learning experience.

Pigeons are just rats with wings.

SERK2008, that learning expirience hurts doesn't it sounds to me like you dont mind poisoning pidgons in the park, ha ha , I found out that if you just stiffen up out of fear and hit dead on whatever small animal is in your way the bike just mows them over and you go on to have a good day 3 dogs now one of witch was my oun found out the hard way that they needed to look out for bikes, and cars, its the bigger animals that worry me wild hogs, deer, cow's, elk, (antilope, are really suicidal), and i did have a run in with a badger last year! good luck with the cars and pidgons we in the country have are hand's full with the animals

Pigeons taste pretty good. They're actually rock doves.

You are usually best off not making any radical moves to miss small animals. I really like dogs and OK with cats, but I'm not going to kill myself trying to avoid them. Last time a dog jumped out in front of my bike I braked hard. When I saw that impact was imminent I cranked on the throttle, popped the clutch and pulled up on the handlebars...managed to wheelie over the unfortunate cur.
Just about anything on four legs can maneuver quicker than you can on two wheels. Even when it's a BIG critter you are safest braking hard and scrubbing off as much speed as you can before impact.

Best bet IMO is like Shovel said...and AIM for the animal that most likely (hopefully) won't be there when you get there...same reason racers aim for an accident ahead of them.

Don't forget the kamikazee turtles that race to intercept you no matter where you AIM.
